Net Closes on Ilhan Omar’s Family: Subpoenas Issued, New Probe Into ‘Missing Millions,’ and Focus on Father’s Role in Dictatorship

Federal authorities have reportedly issued subpoenas to relatives of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar as part of a growing investigation into immigration fraud.Author Sahra Noor, Ms. Omar’s sister, received a subpoena along with one other member of the family, unnamed sources told the New York Times. The Sun emailed Ms. Noor for comment but did not immediately receive a reply.The subpoenas were issued a day after federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security searched Ms. Omar’s Washington, D.C.-area home in connection with a criminal investigation for alleged immigration fraud.Ms. Omar moved from Somalia to America with her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, in 1995 and became a citizen in 2000. Ms. Omar said she was 17 at the time and received automatic citizenship when her father became a naturalized citizen, but there have long been claims that she was actually 18 at the time and would not have received automatic citizenship. Ms. Omar has said she does not have a birth certificate from war-torn Somalia.Now there are allegations that Ms. Omar or her late father may have lied or omitted information about his past on paperwork to secure legal status and citizenship. Ms. Omar has described her father as an educator but he has been identified as a former military officer in the army of the brutal Somali dictator Siad Barre. Nur even led a regiment during the 1977-1978 Somali-Ethiopian war, according to Yusuf Ismail Faraton, who also served as a colonel in the Somali army.Nur escaped with his family to Kenya after Barre’s 1991 ouster before arriving in America.In a 2020 article about Nur after his death from covid complications, the Minnesota based news outlet Sahan Journal referred to Nur as an “esteemed senior officer” when he served in the Somali National Army.Oxford University doctoral researcher Mohamed Haji Ingiriis has written a book on the rise and fall of the Barre Regime. Mr. Ingiriis says Nur should not have been given asylum in America.“He was the beneficiary of the military regime,” Mr. Ingiriss told the New York Post. He said Nur was loyal to the regime until the end. “He was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they ‘fled’ to live comfortably in the United States,” Mr. Ingiriss said.The fraud investigation into Ms. Omar could result in charges and potentially an effort to strip her of her citizenship. The Justice Department could pursue a civil denaturalization case because it would not be subject to a statute of limitations while criminal cases do have time limitations.Heritage Foundation Legal Fellow Cully Stimson, a former military judge, tells the Sun the investigation may expand after investigators review all of the information seized from the search of Ms. Omar’s home. “It may have a ripple effect in terms of what else you can look for. They may have to reapply for a different kind of search warrant. Maybe there’s a cell phone or bank records or wire transfers that took place that once they look at this, they’ll look elsewhere,” Mr. Stimson said.Ms. Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, said Wednesday he had “no concerns” about the investigation. “My wife came here when she was 12 years old as a child war refugee,” Mr. Mynett told a reporter outside their Minnesota home.Ms. Omar has other legal trouble dealing with required Congressional financial disclosures. United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeannine Pirro confirmed Tuesday that her office is conducting a separate probe centering on paperwork Ms. Omar filed last year reporting on her 2024 assets.The annual filing initially showed Ms. Omar and her husband had $6 to $30 million in assets, a large increase from the previous year’s filing. Ms. Omar later refiled the paperwork to declare that her assets were only worth between $18,000 and $95,000. She said the first filing was due to an accounting error that included the total equity of two businesses that Mr. Mynett was involved with rather than his ownership interest.The House investigator declined to recommend disciplinary action against Ms. Omar, but Ms. Pirro says that doesn’t matter. “We’re looking at the facts. Based upon the facts, we’ll follow them wherever they take us,” Ms. Pirro said in a Fox News interview.
