New Renderings Disclose Scale of Trump’s $400 Million White House Ballroom Project

New renderings submitted by the White House to the National Capital Planning Commission provide the most detailed vision yet of President Trump’s proposed $400 million ballroom addition. The images, submitted by the project’s architects, depict a sprawling structure expected to be around 90,000 square feet.The renderings appear in a 28-page document titled “East Wing Modernization.” They show the proposed building standing level with the White House mansion, featuring a ballroom, office space, and a two-story colonnade. According to CNN, the images were briefly removed from the planning commission’s website shortly after being uploaded on Friday, ahead of a scheduled March 5 hearing where board members are set to discuss the proposal. They have now been reposted.The project, now led by architecture firm Shalom Baranes Associates, is being financed by private donors and large corporations, including Amazon, Meta, Apple, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Palantir Technologies, Google, and Comcast.Mr. Trump took to social media last week to share two renderings and champion the project’s progress. “It is on budget, and ahead of schedule!” Mr. Trump wrote. “When completed, it will be the finest Ballroom ever built anywhere in the World, one that has been sought by Presidents for over 150 years — and now they are getting THE BEST!”“Because of its unprecedented structural, safety, and security features, it will also be used for future Presidential Inaugurations,” he added. The White House said in a July announcement that the project is “expected to be completed long before the end of President Trump’s term,” but experts say that may be wishful thinking. The project has faced significant backlash. In October, the administration began demolishing the East Wing to clear space for the ballroom before construction plans had been submitted to oversight bodies. In December, the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the construction, arguing that the administration violated multiple laws by tearing parts of the White House “without any review whatsoever.”In a February 5 memo to the planning commission, director of the White House Office of Administration Joshua Fisher defended the demolition. “Based on analysis, demolition of the existing East Wing structure and reconstruction of a new East Wing provided the most effective solution to many longstanding issues affecting the White House and delivered the best long-term risk reduction,” Mr. Fisher wrote.Mr. Fisher assured the commission that “significant historical items associated with the buildings have been meticulously preserved,” including the East Wing cornerstone, movie theater furniture, and interior wood paneling. “Our goal is to ensure that some of these items will be integrated into the new structure,” he added.Addressing concerns about the safety of the main residence during the work, Mr. Fisher said that “all heavy equipment has been kept at a safe distance from the White House mansion as based on industry standards to prevent inadvertent damage to the structure.”Beyond the ballroom, the memo indicated plans “for beautifying the visitor experience,” including upgrades to Lafayette Park and Sherman Park, as well as working to establish a “superior, more efficient, White House visitor security screening center.”
