Ohio Lawmakers Pass Bill Requiring Schools To Teach Students That They Should Wait Until Marriage To Have Children

Public school students in Ohio may soon be taught that they should wait until they get married to have children. The Ohio House voted 58-36 late Wednesday to pass Ohio Senate Bill 276, which approves a plan for schools to teach students a “success sequence,” based on model legislation provided by the Heritage Foundation.If Senate Bill 276 is signed into law, students will be taught that they should graduate high school, get a job, get married, and then have a baby if they want to avoid living in poverty. The sequence instruction would be required for graduation, and parents would not be allowed to opt their children out.Supporters of the legislation highlighted a 2017 report — based on federal data — from a conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute, which found that 97 percent of Millennials who followed the “success sequence” were “not poor” by the time they reached their “prime young adult years. Critics argue that the report did not provide evidence of a correlation between the “success sequence” and economic outcomes.After the vote, the executive director of the Center for Christian Virtue, David Mahan, celebrated the legislation’s passage, saying, “Today’s vote is a win for Ohio students and families.”He said the bill will make Ohio a “national leader in preparing students for lifelong success.”Ohio Democrats opposed the bill, raising doubt that it will be successful in helping residents stay out of poverty. Ahead of the vote, a Democratic state representative, Sean Patrick Brennan, said that his mother followed the sequence put forward by the bill, but the “so-called success sequence did not save my mother” as it “didn’t shield her from poverty or systemic societal problems.”Mr. Brennan said his mother was in an abusive relationship and wound up working two low-wage jobs, and died of breast cancer after failing to get needed healthcare. A Republican state representative, Adam Bird, said that the sequence is not guaranteed to keep Ohioans out of poverty, but said it would improve their chances.Lawmakers in Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas have introduced similar legislation. Last year, Tennessee passed a law that approved the teaching of the “success sequence,” and in March, Indiana’s governor, Mike Braun, signed a similar bill into law.
