Ranchers Warn That ICE Raids Are Disrupting Beef Supply Chain, Causing Higher Prices

Immigration and Customs Enforcement sweeps across cattle country in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas are disrupting the nation’s beef supply chain, according to industry groups, who warn the fallout will push consumer prices even higher.In a joint statement posted on X, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Kansas Livestock Association, and Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association said recent ICE activity has already delayed the shipment of thousands of cattle to processing plants, costing millions of dollars in lost revenue and added expenses.“These ICE operations are having a massive chilling effect on the legal, documented, skilled workers that put beef on the table and keep the cattle supply chain moving,” the groups said in the statement. “Additionally, these types of disruptions will lead to higher beef prices for consumers,” they added, addressing what is already a key issue in the midterm elections.The groups, longtime reliable Trump supporters, said they respect the responsibility of federal agencies to enforce the law. “At the same time, cattle producers, feedyards, dairies, livestock markets, processors, and other rural businesses depend on a stable workforce to care for animals, protect food safety, and keep the supply chains operating,” they said.“Sudden workforce disruptions can create immediate animal-welfare, operational, and economic consequences that extend well beyond an individual business,” they added. “Reported impacts to our organizations throughout the past few days have been: Thousands of fed cattle slated for shipping to processors now delayed, resulting in millions of dollars in lost revenue and additional costs; Workforce disruptions at numerous supply chain chokepoints such as feedyards, dairies, processors, feed and grain companies, transportation hubs, and community services.”The groups went on to say the disruptions “come at a time of enhanced focus and pressure on the cattle and beef supply chain. They are a costly and unnecessary impact to cattle producers already suffering from unwelcome political interference to both the markets as well as the physical supply chain. Frustratingly, the harm these actions cause to cattle producers last for days and weeks after such operations conclude.”Senator Jerry Moran, a Republican, addressed the heightened ICE presence in southwest Kansas in a post on X, saying he had spoken with the Department of Homeland Security chief, Markwayne Mullin, about the importance of coordination with local law enforcement. “I am hearing from Kansans about the increased federal law enforcement presence in southwest Kansas as ICE agents carry out warrants in the area,” Mr. Moran wrote. “Secretary Mullin assured me these warrants are only for the purpose of arresting individuals who have been charged with criminal activities.”The disruptions come as beef prices climb, with the average price of a pound of ground beef hitting an all-time high of $6.92 in August. Ranchers have also been contending with elevated grain, fuel, and fertilizer costs.The unease in farm country has opened a political opening for Democrats, who have launched outreach efforts and ad campaigns targeting vulnerable Republican House districts. At a press call, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, Representative Sharice Davids of Kansas, and the Democratic National Committee deputy executive director, Libby Schneider, joined Illinois farmer John Bartman to criticize President Trump’s trade policies, which they say have contributed to a wave of farm bankruptcies and record farm debt.“Trump wants to give farmers a bailout. A bailout is like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound,” said Mr. Bartman, whose family runs a fifth-generation farm. “We don’t want a bailout. We want markets for our crops.”Democrats have paired the messaging with a 30-second video ad running in Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Kentucky, seeking to capitalize on rural discontent ahead of the midterms.
