RFK Jr. Sidelines Task Force Charged With Developing Health Screening Guidelines

A group of Democratic senators is demanding that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. explain why he has canceled meetings for more than a year of a volunteer task force charged with developing recommendations for preventative health care in America.The United States Preventive Services Task Force is an independent, volunteer panel of 16 experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine. The group, established during the Reagan administration, works to improve the health of Americans by making recommendations about clinical preventive services.It typically makes 15 to 25 recommendations a year to primary care clinicians for services such as screenings, counseling, and preventive medications. The group also decides which medical tests should be cost-free under health insurance plans.The task force made its most recent final recommendation last June. That decision called for clinicians to screen women of reproductive age, including those who are pregnant and postpartum, for intimate partner violence.It issued a draft recommendation in August related to screening adults for unhealthy alcohol use but has not issued a final recommendation on that topic.The task force has not met since March 2025. Mr. Kennedy canceled scheduled July and November meetings and most recently, a March 2026 meeting.Dr. Alex Krist is a former chairman of the task force. He says he is “terrified” by the lack of meetings. “It makes no sense to me,” Dr. Krist told The New York Sun.Dr. Krist calls the task force a national treasure that produces the world’s gold standard of guidelines related to preventive medicine. He says he applies recommendations from the task force every day when seeing patients.“Literally every patient I see. There’s about five to 10 task force recommendations that I need to be thinking about and applying it to my patient,” Dr. Krist said. “And this is basic stuff like screening for cancer, preventing heart disease, addressing mental health, and helping people with health behaviors to eat right and to exercise.”The Democratic senators sent a letter to Mr. Kennedy expressing concern over the “potential for detrimental upheaval within the task force” and the possibility that the task force “may no longer be guided by integrity, independence, scientifically-backed processes, or evidence-based recommendations.”The health secretary appoints task force members to four-year terms. Members are typically screened to ensure they have no substantial conflicts of interest that could impair the scientific integrity of their work.The letter to Mr. Kennedy says the task force has had five vacancies since December but it appears that no move has been made to fill the open slots. The senators asked Mr. Kennedy to answer a series of questions about the future of the task force.Dr. Krist said the task force’s work “really aligns with Make America Healthy Again concepts of promoting healthy behaviors and finding disease earlier when we can treat it better and trying to promote good mental health. So that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”A group of 104 health organizations previously raised concerns about the status of the task force. They sent a letter to the relevant House and Senate committees claiming that the integrity of the task force is in jeopardy.“The loss of trustworthiness in the rigorous and nonpartisan work of the Task Force would devastate patients, hospital systems, and payers as misinformation creates barriers to accessing lifesaving and cost effective care,” the letter stated.The letter was organized by the chief executive of AcademyHealth, a nonpartisan organization that represents health and policy researchers. Dr. Aaron Carroll says AcademyHealth will continue to lead the charge to defend the Task Force and “evidence-informed policy.”Mr. Kennedy already faces a legal challenge over his work to reshape another influential voluntary panel. He dismissed all of the members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices last year and started replacing them, often with members who have expressed vaccine skepticism.The committee provides recommendations on the use of immunizations for the control of vaccine-preventable diseases.In September, the committee voted to recommend Covid shots only for people 65 and older and those with underlying health issues. In December, it voted to no longer recommend giving the hepatitis B vaccine to most newborns on the day they are born. The committee also recommended cutting the number of vaccines that children should receive.Senator Bill Cassidy, a doctor who cast one of the deciding votes to confirm Mr. Kennedy as health secretary, posted on X before the hepatitis B vote, “The ACIP is totally discredited. They are not protecting children.”A President Biden-appointed federal judge issued an order last month temporarily blocking the new recommended childhood vaccination schedule. District Judge Brian Murphy said the vaccine panel was “tainted” because it did not follow requirements that its members be “fairly balanced” and because many of the new members appeared to be “distinctly unqualified” for the role.Some of Mr. Kennedy’s changes to vaccine policy have not proven popular with the American public. There are predictions that it could be an issue in the midterm elections.In recent months, Mr. Kennedy has focused more on promoting healthy eating but that is also drawing backlash among some in the medical community. The American Heart Association released new dietary guidelines last month that clash with Mr. Kennedy’s push for more beef consumption. “The ACIP is totally discredited. They are not protecting children.”A new set of dietary guidelines Mr. Kennedy rolled out in January features steak, beef, and poultry. The Heart Association, by contrast, suggests a shift from meat to plant sources such as legumes and nuts for protein because they are rich in unsaturated fat and fiber.The Department of Health and Human Services did not respond to a request for comment from The New York Sun.
