Social media fame helped save in Bangladesh a rare blonde buffalo dubbed “Donald Trump” from being sacrificed for Eid al-Adha, the “feast of sacrifice” in Islam, which commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son. “Save this beautiful buffalo man…so unique…” wrote one X user.“Crowdsource its purchase — let the poor get THREE buffalo to sacrifice and eat — bring it back to Florida,” another user wrote. Even conservative think-tanks got in on the action, with a Hudson Institute senior fellow, Bill Drexel, sharing a video of the buffalo and writing, “On one hand, Bangladesh’s Donald Trump buffalo, and its popularity in person and online, is a clear testament to the President’s uncanny charisma. On the other hand, I missed the detail that its on track to be ritually sacrificed soon. Not sure how I would think about that if I were @POTUS. Save the buffalo?”Most cattle in Bangladesh are dark, but Donald is an albino. That condition produced the blonde hair, the source of his presidential sobriquet. The animal’s original owner, Zia Uddin Mridha, sold it ahead of the festival. He said the animal is gentle but needs special care. But with the clock counting down until the rare animal was set to be sacrificed, the Bangladesh home ministry stepped in on Wednesday and said that Donald would be spared from death and sent to live at a zoo at Dhaka — thanks to the publicity around the beast.“At the last moment, the decision was taken to spare the buffalo from sacrifice due to security concerns and the unusual level of public interest,” a ministry official said. The head of the National Zoo, Atiqur Rahman, said staff will take good care of the creature.“We have designated a shed for the albino buffalo and assigned a caregiver,” he said. “He will be quarantined for two weeks.”While Donald has been spared, it is estimated that roughly 12 million other livestock not fortunate enough to resemble world leaders will be sacrificed as part of Eid al-Adha.
