Soros-Backed Foundation Funds United Nations Proposal for Global Slavery Reparations

The United Nations is expected to receive a resolution this month — a campaign funded by a group founded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros — to recognize slavery as the “gravest crime in the history of humankind,” and set the table for a call for Great Britain and other countries to pay reparations.Ghana announced a push for the United Nations to take up the issue of reparations for transatlantic slavery, sending delegates to New York to drum up support for other nations to vote in favor of the resolution.The push is led by a joint Caribbean and African campaign sponsored by the Open Society Foundations, which supports strengthening the global reparations movement. The Open Society has paid for a series of reparations summits across Europe and Africa.“Our role as funders is to support reparations work while respecting the autonomy of Africans and people of African descent,” an advocacy officer for the Open Society Foundations, Jasmine Mickens, said at the founding of the campaign in late 2024.The foundation launched a major African initiative last July that included support for “reparative justice efforts.” It has awarded $1 million to TrustAfrica, which funded a December reparations summit at the United Nations. After that summit, President John Mahama of Ghana announced the push for the UN resolution.Caribbean nations are also demanding England pay reparations for centuries of slavery and colonialism. European countries have resisted the idea. Critics say today’s governments should not be held responsible for historical wrongs.More than 10 million Africans were forcefully transported to the Caribbean as the enslaved chattel and property of Europeans over a period of 300 years, according to an intergovernmental group, the Caribbean Community, which represents the Caribbean nations.The group has a 10-point plan for what it calls reparatory justice. It includes asking for a formal apology, a program to resettle descendants of slaves who want to return to their ancestral lands, a development plan to provide land to the native Caribbean population, and debt cancellation for Caribbean governments.The foundation has given $350,000 to the University of the West Indies to “to increase global consciousness and action on reparatory justice and to strengthen Caribbean-Africa engagement,” according to the Telegraph.The Telegraph reported that Mr. Soros’s foundation is also a “key partner” for the African Union Economic, Social, and Cultural Council, an advisory group that worked with the African Union to fight for reparations.Mr. Soros’s foundation is also reportedly funding legal experts planning to bring cases to the International Court of Justice seeking reparations rulings.The foundation, now led by Mr. Soros’s son, Alex, also helped fund a summit in New York in 2024 that advocated for the Church of England to pay reparations for its involvement in slavery. A recent poll found most members do not support allocating church funds to reparations.The Open Society Foundations did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
