Southern Poverty Law Center’s Ex-Intel Chief Indicted Over Alleged Secret Payments to White Supremacists

Attorney General Todd Blanche is hinting that more indictments could be coming after the Southern Poverty Law Center’s former director of intelligence was charged with fraud relating to payments made by the group to people inside white supremacist organizations.The Department of Justice arrested Heidi Beirich on Wednesday. She is accused of overseeing more than $4 million in secret payments.“I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies’ names and make payments to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described,” Mr. Blanche told reporters. “The fact that an indictment has been returned doesn’t end the investigation, it’s just part of the investigation,” he added.The SPLC began using informants to infiltrate extremist groups in the 1980s. The source that helped plan the Charlottesville, Virginia, “Unite the Right” rally, known as “F-37,” was paid more than $300,000 between 2014 and 2023, the indictment alleges. Another source was reportedly paid more than a million dollars during a two-decade affiliation with a neo-Nazi organization, the National Alliance.Ms. Beirich, who left the law center more than five years ago, is charged with wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment of money laundering.“As alleged, Heidi Beirich was at the center of our ongoing investigation into SPLC and their previously alleged criminal activity – where SPLC knowingly misled donors, who believed their money was being used to dismantle violent extremist organizations – when in fact, part of those donations were instead being used to pay senior leadership within those extremist groups,” FBI Director Kash Patel wrote in an X post.A lawyer for Ms. Beirich, Michael J. Proctor, said the indictment is politically motivated. “A free and fair society does not use the justice system to silence its political opponents,” Mr. Proctor said in a statement to the Associated Press.Ms. Beirich led a project that compiled an annual report on organizations that it classified as hate groups. Critics said the report lumped several Christian and socially conservative groups with white supremacists if they had taken public positions against gay marriage.The Department of Justice disclosed an indictment of the SPLC in April on financial crimes. Mr. Blanche said the group was “manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred.” The 11-count indictment alleges that the organization has been funding the “leaders and organizers of racist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Nation, and the National Alliance.”In May 2025, a few months before the murder of Charlie Kirk, the SPLC published a lengthy report on Kirk’s political action group, Turning Point USA, saying it was “at the forefront of the movement to promote Christian nationalism.”The SPLC has sought to dismiss the charges claiming the prosecution is vindictive and “amount to retaliation, violating the SPLC’s constitutional right to due process.” A request for comment by the law center on the new indictment was not immediately returned.
