The Czinger 21C Spyder Is the Most Ambitious —and Ridiculous —Supercar Yet

This is a great era for the American supercar. The Corvette ZR1X can beat almost any car on the road, regardless of price; the Mustang GTD is the fastest production Mustang ever; and Hennessey now offers not just some of the most powerful hypercars on the market, but also a cool manual one in the Blackbird. Even the best German cars are American. The best Porsche you can buy is a restomod 911, and the two brands making the best versions are Singer Vehicle Design and Gunther Werks, based at Torrance and Huntington Beach, respectively.Czinger 21C Spyder. Courtesy of CzingerBut none of them is more ambitious and ridiculous than Czinger; the Los Angeles-based hypercar maker uses technology from its industrial 3D-printing sister company, Divergent Technologies, to make some of the most absurd hypercars in the world. Its cars are obscenely fast, use small, absurdly power-dense, high-revving V-8s, and, with their upright headlights, big wings, and tandem seating, look like nothing else made on Earth.And at Monterey Car Week, Czinger unveiled the third variant of its central-seat hypercar, the 21C Spyder.Czinger 21C Spyder. Courtesy of CzingerIt’s not a conventional convertible — the 22-pound carbon-fiber hardtop stays behind on its dedicated stand once you remove it — but is basically the track-oriented 21C with its hardtop popped off. The Spyder weighs just 22 pounds more than the hardtop version, and it’s hard to understand why anyone would choose that original over this, particularly in the gorgeous chocolate-carbon debut spec.Otherwise, this is basically the same as the coupe, sharing Czinger’s 2.88-liter, twin-turbocharged, flat-plane-crank V-8, which revs to 11,000 rpm and makes 750 horsepower. An electric motor attached to the crankshaft and two permanent-magnet motors at the front axle raise total output to 1,250 horsepower and 691 pound-feet of torque, with all-wheel drive.With the roof on, the car will accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 1.92 seconds, cover a quarter-mile in 8.7 seconds, and reach 205 mph — and though you wouldn’t want to drive it close to that performance with the roof removed, at least it makes the tandem seating seem a lot less claustrophobic.Czinger 21C Spyder. Courtesy of CzingerAside from the roof, the big new technical upgrade is its BrakeNode. This single module combines the suspension upright, brake caliper, and hydraulic passages in one additively manufactured aluminum-alloy structure. Czinger says it removes 1.5 pounds of unsprung mass from each corner, increases stiffness by up to 30 percent, applies the brake pads more evenly to the carbon-ceramic discs, shortens stopping distances by up to 15 percent, and helps cool the brakes. The component will also be offered on the 21C HDF and VMax coupes.Czinger will hand-assemble 30 examples at Area 21, its Los Angeles production facility, starting at $2.75 million before options.
