Are the Democrats getting bankrolled by foreign political donations? The party’s leading online fundraising platform, ActBlue, is stonewalling Congressional investigators who are trying to find out. Two top House Republicans are vowing to hold ActBlue’s chief executive, Regina Wallace-Jones, in contempt over what they call the nonprofit’s lax policies, which “may allow foreign nationals and bad actors to make large-scale fraudulent donations.”American campaign finance laws make it illegal for foreigners to donate to political contests here. GOP lawmakers are increasingly alarmed by ActBlue’s apparent laxity when it comes to preventing such foreign donations from being made. The heads of the House Judiciary, Oversight, and Administration committees are asking ActBlue to turn over records concerning foreign donations, but the online platform refuses to provide them.These concerns resonate all the more ahead of the midterms, especially with the far-left’s increasing gripes about the sinister role of “dark money.” In quarter one of 2026 alone, some $570 million in donations to the Democrats were made via ActBlue. Hundreds of millions of dollars more are likely to be donated before what is expected to be a close vote in November. The integrity of the elections depends on campaign finance laws being followed.When it comes to ActBlue’s commitment to upholding the law, though, there are grounds for doubt. A law firm advising ActBlue, Covington & Burling, in 2025 warned that the platform faced “substantial risk” for its failure to make certain that campaign donations “were not illegally coming from foreign citizens,” the Times reported. Yet Ms. Wallace-Jones had assured GOP lawmakers that ActBlue was scrupulous in screening out such foreign funders.The law firm found that “some of the steps she had described were not always followed,” per the Times, sparking “a meltdown at the highest levels of ActBlue.” The firm cautioned of the prospect of a “criminal investigation if prosecutors believed that ActBlue had tried to conceal facts about its efforts to prevent foreign contributions,” the Times added. “Mass departures on ActBlue’s legal team” ensued, per the House Judiciary Committee.The GOP lawmakers are looking for “documents and communications” that relate to potential “misconduct at ActBlue,” as well as what they call the prospect of “whistleblower retaliation” within the donation platform. When Ms. Wallace-Jones appeared before Congress, she 22 times invoked her Fifth Amendment right to refuse to testify. She even declined to confirm whether she went by the last name Wallace-Jones or Jones.This lack of transparency is echoed, too, in ActBlue’s defiance of lawmakers’ requests for records. The GOP solons contend that the documents being sought “reportedly contain evidence that ActBlue accepted foreign donations, misled Congress, and then retaliated against an employee who spoke up about it.” ActBlue says the records are shielded by attorney-client privilege. It’s looking like an issue that the courts will need to settle — before November.ActBlue reckons that it is being “targeted by MAGA Republicans because of who we are and what we stand for, not because of any unlawful conduct.” Yet questions over the platform’s handling of foreign donations are only escalating. Given existing laws — about which more later — the chairman of the House administration committee, Congressman Bryan Steil, avers that “foreign funds have no place in American political campaigns.”
