‘They Are Cancer’: Trump Declares Ceasefire With Iran Over After Tehran Strikes U.S. Bases in Retaliation for American Attacks

President Trump called the Iranian regime “cancer” that has to be “cut out early,” declaring the ceasefire with Iran “over” as Tehran attacked U.S. military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait in response to American strikes inside Iran. Speaking at a NATO press conference in Turkey, Mr. Trump called the regime a “bunch of scum” as well as “evil and sick people.”When asked if the Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the U.S. is dead, Mr. Trump replied: “It’s a very interesting question. To me, I think it’s over.”Mr. Trump’s verbal attack came after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched a joint missile-and-drone attack, striking 85 locations linked to U.S. military installations in Bahrain’s Salman Port and Fifth Naval District, as well as Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait.“We say ‘go and do your funeral stuff’ and instead of that they started shooting rockets at ships yesterday. So we hit them very hard last night. I told them ‘every time you hit, we hit’ and of course they’re dirty players so they go after everyone, probably including me. I’ve been number one on their list for years,” the president added. “I don’t think they know what the hell they’re doing, but they’re bad people, very bad people. I think they’re incompetent… They are cancer. And you know what you got to do? You got to cut out cancer early. That’s the way I feel,” Mr. Trump said.The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it struck over 80 targets in Iran overnight local time “as an immediate response” to the regime’s attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Among the targets were Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats “in and near the strait to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international commerce flowing through the international trade corridor.”Iranian media reported that a member of the IRGC’ navy, Mohammad Reza Khazini, was killed in the American attack after he was hit by shrapnel.CENTCOM specified that Iran’s attacks hit the Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity. “The unwarranted aggression by Iranian forces is a clear and dangerous violation of the ceasefire and undermines freedom of navigation,” CENTCOM said. Kuwaiti reported “hostile missile and drone attacks” while air sirens sounded in Bahrain as the IRGC launched its attacks in the early morning hours local time. The U.S. also reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil after they were briefly lifted as part of the agreement between Washington and Tehran, according to Wall Street Journal and other American media. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, lashed out at Washington following the American attacks, calling them “major violations” of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two on June 17. “Violating Iranian adjustments in the Strait. Persistent threats of further strikes. Reinstating oil sanctions. Attacks on southern Iran. Continued Zionist aggression on Lebanon. The era of bullying and extortion is over. It leads nowhere. We don’t fold,” he said. Iran’s Foreign Ministry also commented on Washington’s decision to re-impose sanctions on its oil, saying: “Iran is issuing a serious warning about the consequences of America’s breach of the treaty, and will take decisive measures to protect its interests and national security.”NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also weighed in on the escalation, giving his full support for the U.S. “When you have a ceasefire and Iran is basically violating the ceasefire, I think it is totally crucial that the US forcefully react,” Mr. Rutte said on Wednesday morning. Senior advisor to the president of the United Arab Emirates, Anwar Gargash, also lashed out at Iran for its attacks on vessels and the “repeated aggression against our sisterly Bahrain and Kuwait”, calling it a “clear indicator that Tehran remains incapable of committing to the requirements of de-escalation and ending the war.”“The Gulf Arab states cannot remain the target of Iran’s wavering between the logic of escalation and the path of rationality, stability, and peace,” he added.
