Trash Talk: ‘Count Binface’ Emerges as Farage’s Main Competitor in Snap Election

Every major British political party has declined to field a candidate against Nigel Farage in his bid to win back the seat in Parliament he resigned Tuesday, but the Reform UK party leader nevertheless faces a crowded field.The candidates vying to represent the coastal town of Clacton-on-Sea include a reality TV star, a TV executive, an actor turned founder of the Reclaim Party, and representatives for The Rejoin EU Party, and The Monster Raving Loony Party. But it is the satirical caped crusader Count Binface who has emerged as Mr. Farage’s strongest competitor.“Labour, Tories, Lib Dems and Greens: I demand you stand down in Clacton,” Count Binface posted on X this week. “I will be a unity candidate and pledge to build at least one affordable house.”Mr. Farage — the face of Brexit — is under investigation for a £5 million gift he received from billionaire Reform Party donor Christopher Harborne shortly after he was elected. Mr. Farage announced both his resignation from Parliament and his candidacy in the resulting snap election on Tuesday, saying in a speech that he had done “nothing wrong” and that “the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions.” Representatives for the ruling Labour Party and the Conservative Party quickly dismissed the move as a “stunt” and a “gimmick.”“Nigel Farage says he wants The People versus the Establishment. So be it,” Binface said on X. “Leave him to me.”Mr. Farage remains the strong favorite, with Ladbrokes placing his odds of winning back Clacton at 89 percent as of Thursday morning. Even so, English betting company William Hill has set Count Binface’s odds as low as four-to-one to win, with his chances increasing as more parties have announced they will not field candidates in the election.Count Binface, who wears a trash can on his head over a cape and armor evocative of a paunchy Stormtrooper, is the alter ego of British comedian Jon Harvey. Count Binface is part of a long tradition of fielding stunt candidates to call out absurdities in British politics.Case in point: Members of Parliament are currently discussing what to do should the masked “space politician” actually win. Parliamentary protocol bars MPS from wearing “decorations,” or wearing face coverings while voting. Journalist Nicolas Watt gestured at Count Binface’s regalia as the two appeared together on BBC Newsnight on Wednesday. “There are MPs right now thinking of writing to the speaker saying, were you to be elected, that your mandate would have to be respected, and you’d have to appear in the common chamber just like this,” Mr. Watt said. “That’s politics in 2026,” Count Binface replied through his wastebasket helmet, comparing the discourse to a “fever dream” or “one of Christopher Nolan’s inceptions.”Mr. Farage has yet to offer a comment on his primary competitor.While Count Binface has previously summarized his platform as being “not Nigel Farage,” he offered a sweetener during his TV appearance, citing the cost of running the by-election and the potential for another one should Mr. Farage be compelled to resign again.“So I can say here, now on live BBC television, by voting Binface, you’re saving the British taxpayer 350 grand. You can put that on the side of a bus, and I haven’t done anything. It’s a win-win.”
