Trump Announces Cease-Fire with Iran, Says Strait of Hormuz Set To Reopen

After having discussions with the prime minister of Pakistan, President Trump says he has agreed to a two-week cease-fire with Iran, which in turn will facilitate a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the president announced Tuesday evening. Mr. Trump says he is prepared to negotiate with Iran in order to end the war. In a statement posted to Truth Social on Tuesday evening, Mr. Trump said that he will hold off on using “destructive force” against the Islamic Republic. He had said that Iran’s “civilization” was likely to “die” on Tuesday night due to strikes on Iranian bridges and power plants. “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Mr. Trump wrote. “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” he added. Last week, in a live address to the nation, Mr. Trump said that the United States was close to reaching its military objectives in Iran, and that it should be America’s allies — not America itself — that should be responsible for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He told allies to go to the strait and “just take it.”In his statement Tuesday, the president reiterated that the United States has “already met and exceeded all Military objectives.” He says negotiators “are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” Mr. Trump claimed. “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated.” According to the Iranian state television outlet IRNA, Iran’s negotiators passed along a ten-point proposal for ending hostilities. Pakistan has been mediating talks between the United States and Iran. The list of demands includes an end to conflicts in the Middle East, including between Israel and Lebanon, a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of sanctions, according to IRNA. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Mr. Trump said he was aware of Iran’s requests, though he said they were “not good enough.” Mr. Trump has now embraced that list as a basis for negotiations, however. Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Mr. Trump threatened Iran with a bombing campaign set to begin on Tuesday night. He said that a “whole civilization will die tonight,” even though he did not want that to occur. The comments from Mr. Trump drew outrage from members of Congress, fellow Republicans, and even the Pope. By Tuesday evening, more than 50 House Democrats had called for Mr. Trump to be removed from office via the 25th Amendment, which would allow Vice President JD Vance to take control as acting president temporarily, so long as a majority of the cabinet supported him. One Republican, Congressman Nathaniel Moran, condemned the president’s remarks, saying that America should not be wiping out entire civilizations. Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, said Mr. Trump needed to turn down the temperature. Pope Leo XIV had some of the strongest words of the day, telling reporters just outside of Rome that Mr. Trump’s threats were “truly unacceptable.”“I would simply say, once again, what I said in the [Easter] message on Sunday, asking all people of goodwill to search always for peace,” His Holiness said, urging Americans to call their members of Congress to press for an end to hostilities. “We have a worldwide economic crisis, energy crisis, and a situation in the Middle East of great instability.”
