Tucker Carlson: ‘Apologist for Adolf Hitler’

The declaration by Poland’s embassy to Washington, D.C., that the podcaster Tucker Carlson has now “become an apologist for Adolf Hitler” sets in stark relief just how twisted is the path down which Mr. Carlson has trod. The rebuke came following a colloquy between Mr. Carlson and Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, where Mr. Carslon parroted to Sir Jacob Hitler’s claim that Poland belonged to Germany. That appeared to excuse Hitler’s war of conquest.Poland calls that revisionist account a “colossal insult to the millions of victims of Nazism, including hundreds of thousands of American soldiers.” Mr. Carlson added that the “UK had nothing to do with it, at all, and they destroyed their empire and their country fighting this war that they still pretend was a good idea, but it wasn’t.” Has Mr. Carlson heard of the Battle of Britain, or the Blitz? As Poland puts it, Hitler sought to “conquer the world.”The letter, authored by Poland’s chargé d’affaires, Bogdan Klich, reminds Mr. Carlson that Hitler’s aim was the “complete destruction of the Polish state and the extermination of its population, followed by a continued bloody conquest of the world.” Mr. Klich notes that the Fuhrer did not act alone, but in conjunction with “another totalitarian criminal, Joseph Stalin.” The mass murder of “Europe’s Jewish population” ensued.Mr. Carlson wondered if Britain would be better off today if it had been overrun by the Luftwaffe. He asked “Has the U.K. benefited from it? There are a lot of people in Britain who can’t speak English, so it would be nice to have at least a European language spoken in your country.” Challenges of linguistic integration notwithstanding, the argument that Blighty would be better off in the embrace of the Third Reich is a stretch, to say the least. Historical revisionism has become something of a stock in trade for Mr. Carlson. Sir Jacob declared that Mr. Carlson was “verging on defending Hitler,” to which Mr. Carlson responded “Yeah, I guess I’m just a secret Nazi. I’m actually not a secret Nazi.” He added that he is “hardly a public Nazi.” The chairman of Yad VaShem, though, asserts that Mr. Carlson has engaged in “one of the most repugnant forms of Holocaust denial of recent years.”Mr. Carlson’s distortions are also of a more recent vintage. After the murder of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk he muttered that the culprits might have been, like, those accused of killing Jesus Christ, “eating hummus” at Jerusalem. Meaning Jews. So virulent were the lies that Israel was behind the assasination that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was moved to issue a videotaped statement denying the absurd accusations.Last month Vice President Vance mused that “Tucker is a friend, despite the fact that we disagree on a number of things, And I’m not going to play the game where I throw friends under the bus because I have political disagreements with them. I think that is a terrible place for the United States to go.” An even worse place to go, though, would be the demented destination toward which Mr. Carlson is treading. It’s encouraging to see Poland say nie.
