U.S. Completes Another Round of Bombings in Iran After Two American Soldiers Killed in Jordan

Iran is threatening its neighbors around the region after the United States dropped its ninth round of bombs on Iran Sunday night, one day after announcing the killing of two American servicemembers by an Iranian attack in Jordan on Saturday. Israel is prepared to attack Iran if the Islamic Republic begins launching missiles at its country, the country’s defense minister said on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Israel shot down two ballistic missiles bound for Jordan passing north over its southern resort city of Eilat.On Saturday, CENTCOM announced that two servicemembers had been killed and one was missing after Iranian missiles and drones fell on the Shaheed Muwaffaq Al-Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan. Four others were transported to a hospital but discharged. That brings to 16 the total American death toll since the conflict started on February 28. Iranian military leaders said it will continue to target Al-Salti Air Base as it is a key military hub for U.S. and Jordanian military cooperation. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly declared that it will strike the source of any threat against its national security with decisive and overwhelming force, and, according to Iranian officials, this principle has also been applied to Muwaffaq Al-Salti Air Base,” the Iranian military’s chief news agency, Fars, reported.On Sunday, U.S. Central Command said the United States aimed at Iran’s “military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile, and drone launch sites, and communications networks to further diminish Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.” Earlier in the day, Centcom noted that it also hit a nuclear site at Darkhovin in southwestern Iran along the border with Iraq. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced on Sunday that it is trying to discuss with Iranian officials any potential risks following the attack on the site. “The facility is in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material when last visited by the IAEA,” the agency said in a statement Sunday. “The IAEA has contacted Iran about the public reports and will provide further information as it becomes available.”In retaliation to Saturday attacks, Iran launched a new round of attacks on America’s gulf allies, Bahrain and Kuwait, both of which house U.S. military installations. According to Al Jazeera, a Kuwaiti power plant and desalination plant were both hit by Iranian munitions on Sunday. Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said on Sunday that his country is prepared to launch its own attacks on Iran with “full force” should Iran fire missiles at Israel. “If Iran fires missiles at Israel, we will attack them with full force,” he said, adding that all defensive and offensive measures will be taken, if necessary. Dozens of American refueling aircraft were arriving in Israel over the weekend to help support the American-led mission, a sign that the conflict could escalate in the coming days, the Jerusalem Post reported.The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Warner, said it was “remarkable” that there haven’t been more American military casualties in the months since the war began. “I can say unequivocally: there was no imminent threat from Iran,” Mr. Warner told “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “These bases have been — on and off — under attack since the beginning” of the war, Mr. Warner argued.The energy secretary, Chris Wright, told ABC News’s “This Week” that the attacks against Iran will continue until objectives are achieved. “The president’s mission is essential for peace in the Middle East and peace in the world, and that is to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons, and to degrade their ability to terrorize their neighbors and the world and global commerce,” Mr. Wright said. “So yes, this mission will go on until the mission is done.” He added that while the deaths of the American servicemembers are tragic, the end result of the Iran war will be the safety of “countless lives” in the future who will no longer be under the threat of a nuclear Iran.Mr. Wright insisted on “This Week” that the flow of oil out of the the Persian Gulf is operating at two-thirds maximum capacity, saying that while the number of ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz has declined since reimposition of an American blockade, other nations have been able to transport oil via pipeline to Red Sea ports. Iran is seeking to cut off that transit route with the help of the Houthis in Yemen, which sits on the south side of those transit waters. President Trump is searching for another tool to try to squeeze the Iranians by means other than bombing the country. He called on Congress to give him the authority to issue additional sanctions and tariffs on the Iranian government and its officials by adding Iran to Senator Lindsey Graham’s Russia sanctions bill. That bill, in the works on double speed since the death of the senator last week, will hand the president much greater authority to go after Russian oligarchs, companies, and the third country purchasers of Russian goods. Mr. Trump says he should have the same authority for Iran, writing on Truth Social that it was “IMPORTANT!!!”Noting that Russia and China may be assisting Iran, two senators, Jean Shaheen, a Democrat, who was shepherding the bill with Graham, and Katie Britt, an Alabama Republican, said on “Fox News Sunday” that getting the legislation passed will further isolate Iran.
