U.S. Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against Iran After Missile Attack on American Aircraft in Strait of Hormuz

The United States military struck targets in the Strait of Hormuz in response to an Iranian missile attack — a retaliation described as a defensive measure by U.S. officials to take out missile launchers at Qeshm Island which were used against an American aircraft. “This was a defensive measure for Iranians using surface to air missiles against US assets,” a U.S. official told CNN. Axios also reported that the IRGC fired a missile at a U.S. aircraft leading to American attacks against an Iranian surface-to-air launcher. Fox News reported that the retaliation was not the start of new expanded strikes by the U.S. The IRGC Navy, meanwhile, claimed it captured the “fourth U.S. reconnaissance and decoy drone intact” west of the Strait of Hormuz after taking control of its guidance and control systems, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. The Navy reportedly identified the MQM-170 drones during an “offensive operation”. The U.S. is yet to comment on the claim. Speaking to Axios, President Trump said: “One way or the other, we will do something, but there is no rush. We crippled them financially. They have no money, no gasoline and their people are getting very tired of it.”“We are talking to them. It’s going fine. The problem with them is … they try and tap, tap, tap (us along).. There’s less urgency (on the Iranian side) than you think there would be, but they want to make a deal more than they ever wanted,” Mr. Trump added.The outlet also reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are in favour of continuing the economic pressure campaign against Iran, advising Mr. Trump to maintain the “no war, no deal” status quo. The president also issued a statement on Truth Social on Monday, saying: “Oil Prices are DROPPING LIKE A ROCK, down almost $10 a Barrel, A RECORD, because people feel that there will not be a War with Iran. Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!”Vice President J.D. Vance echoed Mr. Trump on Monday, saying: “Look, the president and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement. We’re going to keep on working at it.” “We haven’t set deadlines (for resuming strikes). We want to make sure the Iranians don’t rebuild or try to rebuild their nuclear program. We do think there is a pathway there, but it requires a firm and verifiable commitment that they don’t rebuild their nuclear program,” Mr. Vance added.
