Zelensky Condemns ‘Exceptionally Horrific’ Russian Strike on Ukrainian Aid Center as U.S. Pushes for New Peace Talks

Russia attacked a Ukrainian school used as a humanitarian aid distribution center killing 26 people in what President Zelensky described as an “exceptionally horrific strike.”The attack was launched on Monday evening against the former school in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. “Russian forces could not have been unaware that local residents who remained in Komyshuvakha received humanitarian aid there every week,” Mr. Zelensky said.Russian strikes also hit a medical facility in Kharkiv overnight, leaving 62 people injured and about 200 patients facing evacuation. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the attack also damaged more than 1,000 windows at the medical facility. Lastly, the Russian Defense Ministry said attacks were also launched at Ukrainian energy facilities in the Kharkiv , Vinnytsia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Ukraine, meanwhile, hacked the Russian emergency alert system in response to a similar attack against Kiyiv’s system.“I underlined it several times that we only respond to their attacks. So, of course, after the attack, when it was very clear to all our people and for all our personnel, and the intelligence, that it’s (Russia’s) personal attack against our people, civilians, of course, we responded,” Mr. Zelensky told PBS NewsHour. The Ukrainian president also urged the world to support his country as it has to be “strong, because otherwise Putin will go further to Europe and to the different parts of NATO countries.”Moscow, meanwhile, said it has no plans to extend humanitarian operations after hundreds of Ukrainian civilians were evacuated from the town of Oleshky in occupied Kherson Oblast. “As for continuing this practice, each specific case is unique. There are no similar plans at this time, nor are there any similar initiatives,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff announced on X that Washington will mediate “working-level negotiations between Ukraine and Russia on November 10–11 in Abu Dhabi, advancing President Trump’s mission to end the war.”Mr. Witkoff said discussions will focus on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and “next steps toward peace.”“Additionally, American negotiators will meet this week in Brussels with representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the EU, and NATO to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe’s post-war security architecture, and economic opportunities to support Ukraine’s reconstruction,” he added.
