UFC Boss as White House Press Secretary? Trump Could Be Asking for a Fight

Dana White’s combative relationship with the press covering his Ultimate Fighting Championship empire may be exactly what President Trump is looking for as he urges the CEO to take the offer to serve as his White House press secretary.While at his golf club in Florida on Saturday, Mr. Trump announced the surprising offer on social media, describing Mr. White as a “violent fighter and warrior” and suggesting that several mixed martial arts competitors could join him as assistants.“We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!”Mr. White, a decades-long friend and supporter of Mr. Trump, did little to discourage the speculation. Shortly after Mr. Trump’s announcement, he posted an AI-generated image on his Instagram stories with the caption, “On to the next chapter.”Asked about the offer at a Zuffa Boxing press conference at London, Mr. White, 57, told reporters he was “flying to Washington, D.C. right now” to meet with Mr. Trump on Monday to discuss the offer.“I’ve got a lot of jobs already,” Mr. White said. “I’m sure we’ll have something to talk about after (the meeting).”The White House has been without a press secretary since October when Katie Zacharia was fired after just five days on the job. Ms. Zacharia had replaced Karoline Leavitt, who stepped down in August to spend more time with her family.Mr. White has spoken at the last three Republican National Conventions in support of Mr. Trump, and the UFC held its Freedom 250 event on the White House South Lawn in June to coincide with Mr. Trump’s 80th birthday.But friendship with the president and his experience promoting a successful combat sports organization are not necessarily qualifications for explaining the policies of the United States government.Though at times it may seem as such, the press secretary’s job is not to win arguments, intimidate reporters, or turn uncomfortable questions into personal feuds, which Mr. White has a history of doing.His confrontations with journalists asking tough questions have become a recurring feature of his public persona, especially since adding Zuffa Boxing to his UFC duties. During a May interview with entrepreneur David Serna, Mr. White delivered a profanity-laced assessment of reporters who criticize his business decisions, fighter pay, and Zuffa’s effort to make sweeping changes to legislation designed to protect professional fighters, the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act.“My biggest problem with the media? Who the f— are you and what the f— have you ever done?” Mr. White said. “You’re nobody, and you’ve never done anything ever. Nobody’s ever depended on you for a paycheck. Who are you to criticize anybody?”Later he added, “I realize these guys know nothing about this business, yet these are the people that are covering it. It’s fascinating to me that anybody listens to any of these people.”Though Mr. White once depended on the media to help the UFC reach mainstream status, he increasingly appears to regard critical coverage as an intrusion. In September 2025, boxing reporter Sean Zittel questioned Mr. White about Zuffa Boxing’s effort to change the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act.Mr. Zittel raised questions about the proposed changes and the UFC’s history of legal disputes over fighter compensation. Mr. White did not provide a substantive answer. Instead, he challenged the reporter, accusing him of showboating and trying to provoke a confrontation.At one point, Mr. White called Zittel an “a**hole.”Prominent MMA journalist Ariel Helwani was banned by Mr. White in 2016 from UFC events for breaking the news of Brock Lesnar’s return before the organization was ready to announce it. The ban was eventually lifted but their relationship remains contentious.“Dana’s interpretation of the media doing its job is ‘showboating’ and ‘being an asshole’ which is laughable,” Mr. Helwani wrote on X. “This is not a new stance, btw. It’s just been a very long time since real questions were asked at these pressers.”Mr. White’s supporters suggest that his bluntness would be refreshing in a briefing room accustomed to carefully scripted responses. They might welcome an unconventional spokesman who thrives on intimidating the press corps. His skills as a gifted promoter, relentless salesman, and an unapologetic combatant helped him turn the UFC into a global sports and entertainment powerhouse. But while those qualities have served him well in the fight business, Washington, D.C., is a different animal.Still, some observers say they are cooking up the popcorn. “Dana White vs the Beltway media will be UFC worthy!” opined Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida.
