University Chancellor Tells Congress ‘Vast Majority of Pregnancies Are in Women’

The University of California at San Francisco’s Chancellor Sam Hawgood insists that not all people who get pregnant are women. “The vast majority of pregnancies are in women,” he said under questioning Tuesday from a Congressional Committee investigating the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices of his school.Dr. Hawgood, a former chair of the school’s “Department of Pediatrics,” was flummoxed by the seemingly simple question from Representative Mary Miller, a Republican from Illinois, “Has a non-biological woman ever had a baby?” Despite the extensive experience with pregnancy and the people who experience it, the chancellor, answered, “A transgender person can,” refusing to state either the current gender identity of the person he says can have a baby or their sex observed at birth.“The consequences from the left of saying that men cannot get pregnant are far worse for people in this position than the blowback from conservatives for saying that men can,” wrote Benjamin Ryan, a journalist who covers trans activism and its impact on science. “These are carefully calculated positions, taken irrespective of what the person actually believes.” Ms. Miller’s questioned Dr. Hawgood, she said, because the UCSF Medical School curriculum teaches young doctors to refer to “pregnant people” not “pregnant women” according to the school’s “Framework for Gender and Sex Concepts in Teaching.” The question of whether men can get pregnant and the accuracy of saying “pregnant people” instead of “pregnant women” has traveled from trans activism to medical schools to medical organizations and all the way to the Centers for Disease Control Under the Biden administration.Newspapers and broadcasters who follow the Associated Press Style Book often write or say “pregnant people,” because in the words of National Public Radio’s then Public Editor Kelly McBride of the Poynter Institute, “The term ‘pregnant people’ is used to be more accurate and inclusive,” she wrote in the radio network’s newsletter, “Inclusive language is not about critical mass. It’s about possibility. Journalists swapped in firefighter for fireman and police officer for policeman long before those professions began admitting women in real numbers.”The public editor went on to quote a trans man saying, “We’re not trying to pit ‘pregnant people’ versus ‘pregnant women,’ ” Sam Schmitt said. “We’re just asking that we don’t have violence levied against our bodies and that we make space for people who are outside of normative bounds of gender.”
