White House Proposes Historic $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget Amid Soaring National Debt

The White House has officially requested a staggering $1.5 trillion for defense spending in the 2027 fiscal year, with President Trump suggesting the increase could come at the expense of social programs like Medicare and Medicaid. With the United States embroiled in conflicts globally, including the war with Iran, the proposed budget represents the highest level of military spending in modern history. If enacted, it would amount to a roughly 40 percent increase over what the United States spent on the Pentagon in the current fiscal year.However, the massive military buildup would come at a severe cost to domestic safety nets and agencies. Mr. Trump has made it clear that substantial cuts are needed for foundational social programs. “It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all of these individual things,” Mr. Trump said this week at a private lunch. “They can do it on a state basis.” He emphasized that the administration’s primary focus must be “military protection.”The proposal arrives as the national debt climbs above $39 trillion, a level reflecting the actions of both recent administrations. Mr. Trump added about $8 trillion to the national debt during his first term, compared to the roughly $4.3 trillion added during President Biden’s time in office.To offset the massive defense hikes, the administration has proposed $73 billion in domestic cuts, heavily targeting the EPA, the Energy Department, and the Department of Health and Human Services. The budget also floats the privatization of TSA screeners and slashes funding intended to reduce racial disparities and assist the poor. The White House budget director, Russell T. Vought, defended the blueprint, saying in a letter before the release of the proposal that it “would ensure that the United States continues to maintain the world’s most powerful and capable military.”Fiscal watchdogs are sounding alarms over the spending proposal. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget said the plan would represent “by far the largest year-over-year increase in defense spending in the post-WWII era.” The nonpartisan group estimates this could add $6.9 trillion to the national debt over the next decade once interest costs are factored in. They urged that the request “should be fully offset by other proposals in his budget.”Billionaire Elon Musk put the situation bluntly at an economic conference last September, saying, “If you look at our national debt, which is insanely high, the interest payments exceed the Defense Department budget — and they keep rising.” He added, “If AI and robots don’t solve our national debt, we’re toast.”The Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, echoed these concerns during a Monday address to 400 Harvard economics students. “The level of the debt is not unsustainable, but the path is not sustainable. It will not end well if we don’t do something fairly soon.”Mr. Powell emphasized the disparity between economic growth and debt accumulation: “What’s clear is that our debt is growing much faster; the federal government debt is growing substantially faster than our economy. And that ratio is going up. And in the long run, that’s kind of the definition of unsustainable.”Mr. Powell placed the responsibility on lawmakers, noting, “We don’t have to pay the debt down. We just need to have primary balance and begin to have the economy actually growing more quickly than the debt.” Yet, he acknowledged the historical futility of his advice: “I pretty much limit myself to those high-level points, which essentially everyone ignores.”The proposal for sweeping cuts has already drawn bipartisan criticism. Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, wrote on X that “the president’s budget request is just that, a request. … While the administration proposes a budget, Congress holds the power of the purse.”Senator Patty Murray, a Washington Democrat, criticized the president, saying he “wants Congress to defund dozens of programs that help students so that he can send other people’s kids to fight a war with no justification,” the New York Times reported.Defending his strategy, Mr. Trump claimed a new antifraud campaign targeting “Blue States” would offset costs. “The numbers are so large that, if successful, we would literally be able to balance our American budget,” the president claimed on social media.
