White Students Are Now a Minority in American Schools, New Analysis Finds

White students for the first time make up less than half of all Americans enrolled in schools — from nursery through graduate programs — according to a new analysis of U.S. Census data. As of October 2024, white (non-Latino, non-multiracial) students account for 48.8 percent of all Americans enrolled in public, private, and homeschool systems, per the Census Bureau’s School Enrollment Supplement reviewed by Axios. There were 36.6 million white students enrolled in 2024, down from 46.7 million in 2000.The shift reflects broader demographic trends reshaping the country. Hispanic, Asian American, and multiracial populations have expanded through births, immigration, and demographic change, while white Americans have experienced lower fertility rates and slower population growth. The result, Axios notes, is now visible in classrooms across the country.Latino students have seen the sharpest rise over the period, growing to 18.4 million enrolled students from 10.2 million. Now the second-largest student group, Latinos account for 24.4 percent of total enrollment.The demographic shift is most pronounced in early childhood and K-12 education. White non-Hispanic children make up around 47 percent of nursery and kindergarten students and 48 percent at the elementary and high school level. Higher education remains the one sector where white students are still a majority, at 51.1 percent — though Axios notes this is likely to erode over the next decade as the more diverse K-12 cohort ages into colleges and universities.The changes are unfolding against a challenging backdrop. America’s future workforce and electorate are moving through schools strained by 20-year-low reading scores, teacher shortages, and racial segregation at levels not seen since the 1960s, according to Axios. How schools, colleges, and policymakers respond to this demographic shift will define opportunity for a generation.Gaps in access and outcomes remain a pressing concern. Hispanic 3- and 4-year-olds enroll in nursery schools at just 52.1 percent — the lowest rate of any major group — raising concerns about school readiness disparities. College completion gaps are also significant: Only 37.3 percent of Hispanic 20- to 21-year-olds are enrolled in college, compared to 53.9 percent of white students and 78.6 percent of Asian Americans in the same age group.Total school enrollment in 2024 was nearly 1 million below 2019 levels and almost 4 million below the modern peak of 79 million in 2011, per the Axios analysis.
