Zoo Atlanta’s New Pandas Steal the Spotlight in Public Debut

Zoo Atlanta’s newest residents, giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, made their long-awaited public debut on Friday, drawing crowds of eager visitors to the newly renovated Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove. The pair arrived from China in September under a 10-year loan agreement, marking the return of pandas to the zoo after a two-year absence. The 6-year-old animals spent weeks acclimating to their new habitat before greeting the public for the first time. True to their distinct personalities, the two pandas responded to the attention in very different ways. Ping Ping, the male, embraced the spotlight, happily munching bamboo near the glass windows separating him from the crowd of onlookers, while Fu Shuang seemed entirely unmoved by the ceremony, sprawling out with her stomach down and his head turned away from the cameras. The president and CEO of Zoo Atlanta, Raymond B. King, described the pair’s contrasting temperaments in a statement: “He has got a lot of personality. She’s a little more reserved, probably a little more cautious in trying new things, but they’ve both adapted very, very well,” he told ABC News.Mr. King also reflected on the significance of the moment, saying, “This is an extraordinary moment in history for Zoo Atlanta, the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond. Zoo Atlanta is thrilled to be able to introduce Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to our Members and guests. We are honored to be the stewards of a species that not only brings joy and wonder to people around the world, but which also represents a conservation success story.”Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. Ping Ping, born March 17, 2020, has a name meant to represent a smooth and healthy life, while Fu Shuang — whose name derives from “fu lu,” meaning happiness — just celebrated her sixth birthday on October 18.Among the visitors drawn to the event was the Chinese ambassador to the United States. Xie Feng, who called the pandas’ arrival a renewal of “a decade-long bond between China and Zoo Atlanta,” adding that he trusts the pandas will “eat happily, sleep soundly, and grow healthy and strong in their new home, bringing twice the joy and happiness to everyone who loves them.”Zoo Atlanta’s previous pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, returned to China in 2024 along with their cubs, ending a 25-year partnership between the zoo and China. Zoo Atlanta now joins the San Diego Zoo and the National Zoo at Washington, D.C., as one of three U.S. zoos currently housing giant pandas on loan. For longtime Atlanta residents like Kim Herres, who has visited the zoo’s pandas since 1999, the creatures represent something larger than entertainment. “I’m just glad we’ve gotten them back,” she told the Associated Press. “Hopefully we won’t make the Chinese mad, and they won’t come get them.”
