Afghan Girls Are Being Sold to Buyers That Nobody Names

In Afghanistan today, researchers and aid workers put the going price of a child bride at roughly $3,200, a transaction playing out against a famine that has left more than a quarter of the population without reliable food, in a country where international humanitarian funding has fallen 80 percent since 2022.The Taliban, meanwhile, have spent more than four years methodically dismantling every legal protection that once existed for women and girls, culminating in a decree issued just weeks ago that enshrines the right of guardians to arrange marriages for minors.Fathers are selling daughters. The desperation is real. The famine is real. The aid collapse is real. However, desperation has long served as an explanation, and at some point the explanation functions as an excuse, one that costs girls their lives. Sons are not being sold. The hunger ravaging Afghan households is not resolving itself in a gender-neutral way.When a family decides which child will be the transaction, that is a decision, not a natural disaster. The famine creates the pressure, and the fathers make the call.Coverage of this crisis, when it surfaces at all, tends to center on the sellers: poverty, Taliban policy, funding gaps at UNICEF and UNHCR. All of that is real and worth documenting.There is, however, a question that rarely gets asked, and the omission is not accidental: Who is buying these girls?That question generates discomfort in ways that “aid funding shortfall” does not. It requires naming, with specificity, the men who are paying cash to purchase prepubescent children. It requires acknowledging that this is not an abstract humanitarian failure but a market, with buyers, sellers, transactions, and a functioning price structure. It also requires confronting the fact that demand is not limited to impoverished Afghan men within the same village or valley.The buyers are not a monolithic category. At the lower end of the market, older men within the same province, sometimes already married, are acquiring second or third wives from families that have run out of alternatives. These intra-community transactions are the ones that occasionally make it into reporting. What gets far less attention is the demand that comes with more purchasing power and broader geography.Researchers and trafficking investigators working the Afghanistan-Pakistan corridor and the Iran border describe an active pipeline.Afghan girls have been documented as trafficking victims in Gulf states including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where Afghan nationals appear in case records involving forced labor and sexual exploitation — part of a broader regional pipeline that trafficking researchers say extends well beyond Afghanistan’s immediate neighbors.Iran is particularly well-documented.The United States Department of State’s most recent Trafficking in Persons Report finds that Afghan girls are vulnerable to forced marriage with men in Iran, which frequently leads to sex trafficking and forced labor, including domestic servitude.Pakistan, host to one of the world’s largest Afghan refugee populations, has drawn direct warnings from UN human rights experts: children moving through the country are at serious risk of trafficking and child marriage, and neither government is moving to stop it.Demand does not stop at Afghanistan’s borders. Afghan men living in Europe and North America, many with active family ties inside the country, can pay well above the going rate. Money moves through informal hawala networks that leave no paper trail and cross borders without triggering any financial oversight.Child marriage in Afghanistan is not a Taliban invention. It predates them by generations. What the Taliban did was tear down every legal protection that aid groups, Afghan civil society, and the former government spent 20 years building. The minimum marriage age is gone. The girls have no lawyer, no court and no advocate with standing to intervene. They cannot say no.The famine is making permanent what might once have been temporary desperation. A nine-year-old sold to a household across three provinces, or across a border, does not come back. No future government, no policy reversal, no aid influx recovers her. The transaction is final. It is happening now, this month, to girls whose names will not appear in any report.The demand side of this story — who the buyers are, where they originate, how money moves, which governments are choosing to look the other way — requires reporting that generates diplomatic friction.Gulf states are partners in Western security arrangements. Pakistan is a counterterrorism interlocutor. Iran, now in open conflict with the United States, has never faced accountability for its role in trafficking Afghan girls. Not one of these governments is under meaningful pressure to investigate or prosecute the purchase of Afghan girls, and Western donors have not made it a condition of their aid or engagement, even as that aid collapses.Journalists covering Afghanistan’s humanitarian emergency are not ignoring child marriage. It appears in the stories, routinely. Yet it tends to appear as context, one more item in the ledger of Taliban abuses, rather than the central investigative question it deserves to be. The frame is almost always supply-side: how many girls, how poor the families are, what the edicts say.The $3,200 figure will make the rounds when the next famine report drops. It should. But a price is only half the story. The other half — who is paying it, where they are, how the money moves — has gone largely unasked. Until the buyers face the same scrutiny as the Taliban and the donors who walked away, what passes for coverage of this crisis is incomplete.
