Ailing Basketball Star Held in Indonesia on Drug Conviction Begs Trump To Break Bureaucratic Gridlock

Jarred Shaw, a former college basketball standout held in Indonesia since May 2025 on drug charges, is facing a rapidly compounding nightmare. Battling with a severe, potentially life-threatening case of Crohn’s disease, the 36-year-old from Dallas has issued an urgent plea to President Trump, requesting direct diplomatic intervention to secure his return to the United States before his health fails completely.Shaw’s ordeal began when Indonesian law enforcement intercepted a shipment of 132 THC gummies sent to him from Thailand. At the time, he was playing professional basketball in Indonesia. Authorities initially charged Shaw with drug trafficking, a severe offense in the Southeast Asian nation that carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment or even execution by firing squad.After months of legal wrangling, Shaw proved he ordered the cannabis gummies to manage the painful symptoms of Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition. Recognizing the lack of trafficking intent, an Indonesian court acquitted him of the major charge in December 2025. However, he was convicted on lesser possession charges and handed a 26-month prison sentence.For a patient managing an autoimmune disorder, the conditions inside the Indonesian penal system proved devastating. Deprived of consistent, specialized medication, Shaw suffered severe complications. Multiple secondary infections set in, including a debilitating E. coli infection that triggered drastic weight loss.His living environment was brutal. According to representatives, Shaw was held in a cramped cell with 10 inmates. The prison was overrun with insects, rodents, and stray cats. With Shaw’s health faltering and his weight plummeting, prison officials transferred him to a hospital facility where he remains under armed guard while advocates press for his freedom.“I need help,” Shaw wrote in a message obtained by the Daily Mail. “I’m here. I’m alone. I’m scared. I don’t know what’s happening. Nobody speaks English. I don’t know what the medicine is that they’re giving me. I can’t walk outside this door. It’s tough.”Shaw’s advocates have drawn direct parallels between his plight and that of WNBA star Brittney Griner. In 2022, Griner was detained at a Moscow airport for carrying vape cartridges with less than a gram of cannabis oil. Russian courts sentenced her to nine years in prison before an intense campaign by organizations like Bring Our Families Home spurred the U.S. government to act, ultimately securing her release through a high-profile prisoner swap for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.Shaw’s supporters hope similar political momentum can be generated to rescue him. Yet, despite growing attention, Shaw’s case remains paralyzed in a web of international red tape. According to Shaw and his legal defense, the president of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has already signed an official amnesty decree approving his release, leaving him waiting only for an official repatriation letter from the U.S. State Department to board a flight home.U.S. officials, however, maintain that they are still awaiting formal confirmation of the amnesty order from Indonesian authorities before taking final steps. The resulting diplomatic impasse leaves Shaw caught in limbo trapped in a foreign hospital bed while both governments wait on paperwork from the other.“I am grateful that they brought me here,” Shaw wrote regarding his hospital transfer. “But if I was granted amnesty from the government here, I don’t understand why my government hasn’t stepped in and brought me back home to my family.”In public statements addressing the matter, the State Department reiterated its commitment, noting, “The Trump Administration has no higher priority than Americans’ safety and security.”According to reports from USA Today, the State Department dispatched a formal letter to Indonesian authorities on August 18 stating that the U.S. Embassy was fully prepared to assist with repatriation efforts. A follow-up letter on September 18 echoed that commitment yet noted that official proof of amnesty remains outstanding.Meanwhile, frustration among Shaw’s advocates continues to boil. A key member of Shaw’s advocacy network, Donte West, founder of the Forgotten Prisoner program, said Shaw has yet to see the State Department’s correspondence. Adding to the ordeal, the Indonesian government is reportedly billing Shaw for his compulsory hospital stay.“Jarred’s case sits at the intersection of shifting cannabis laws and some of the harshest drug penalties in the world,” Mr. West stated on his website. “It shows how sharply consequences can change from one border to the next, and why humanitarian standards — proportionate punishment, adequate medical care, consular access—matter most where penalties are most severe.”
