As the WNBA Spotlight Brightens, Players Must Learn To Handle Big-League Friction

Since its inception in 1996, the WNBA has strived to be recognized as a big-time professional league — one that’s taken seriously alongside the established major sports properties in the United States.That long-sought validation has arrived with unprecedented television ratings, a $3 billion media rights deal, and a new collective bargaining agreement that created unprecedented million dollar player salaries. Yet with its soaring public appeal comes more attention, more scrutiny, and fans who don’t always display their best behavior.Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson is at the very center of that transformation. Voted four times as the league’s Most Valuable Player with three championship rings, she is essentially the LeBron James of the WNBA. But imagine if Mr. James went at every spectator who pointed a finger at him or said something he didn’t like? It would be a nightly occurrence on the NBA circuit.During the fourth quarter of Indiana’s 99-89 victory in Game 2 of their three-game playoff series in Indianapolis, Ms. Wilson singled out an Indiana Fever fan in a confrontation that highlighted these new dynamics.After Fever forward Sophie Cunningham was whistled for a blocking Ms. Wilson’s path to the basket, the Las Vegas star walked slowly to the baseline before suddenly going nuclear on a male fan. Video footage showed a middle-aged Fever fanatic standing up and pointing at Ms. Wilson with his right arm extended before being pulled back into his third row seat by another female fan.Ms. Wilson marched directly to the fan, standing over and shouting at him as security quickly intervened. The fan was initially ejected from the game but eventually allowed to return after security officials determined there was no violation of the league’s Fan Code of Conduct. Ms. Wilson, meanwhile, received a technical foul for leaving the court to confront the fan.“We consider the matter closed,” the Fever organization said in a statement. Meanwhile, in a postgame press conference, Miss Wilson defended her actions. “If I see a man, coming towards me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said, I don’t give a damn how you said it, it’s the tone that is unacceptable. You don’t step towards me and point at me. I’m not for that.”Aces coach Becky Hamon defended her prized player. “Whatever was done, I can tell you she felt very disrespected in that moment,” Ms. Hamon told reporters, adding, “I’ve never seen her really react like that, ever. Whatever it was, he doesn’t have any place, I don’t think in an arena.”The atmosphere at Gainbridge Fieldhouse has been called out for crowd behavior since attention and attendance exploded with the arrival of Caitlin Clark. It comes with the territory of high-stakes sports entertainment.Consider Robin Ficker, a legendary Washington Bullets (now Wizards) fan who would sit behind the bench of the opposing team and use a small megaphone to heckle Michael Jordan about his gambling issues. Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas reportedly once threw a shoe at Mr. Ficker and Charles Barkley, then with the Phoenix Suns, reportedly hired him to heckle Mr. Jordan throughout the 1993 NBA Finals against the Chicago Bulls.The heckling from the former state legislator from Maryland became so pervasive, especially during timeouts, the NBA instituted a rule that forbids anything that would interfere with communication between players and coaches during a timeout.It’s also interesting, the Tuesday incident occurred on the same court where Miss Cunningham sparked an internet frenzy after pointing her finger at former teammate DeWanna Booner during a June 24 game against the Phoenix Mercury in Indianapolis. Ms. Cunningham was not fined or penalized for her actions and images of her pointed finger went viral, resulting in an unofficial merchandise empire.Ms. Wilson is a major beneficiary of the league’s surging commercial appeal. Under a three-year, $5 million supermax deal, she is earning $1.4 million this season — a huge increase over the $200,000 she received in base compensation last year.Despite all the positives, the league has endured significant growing pains, enduring a myriad of controversies from spotting officiating to online harassment and disruptions inside arenas over transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Current commissioner Cathy Engelbert has announced she is stepping down at the end of the season. A new commissioner will inherit these issues, including fan behavior.Crucial to that process will be helping players adapt to the reality of major-league fandom. When supporters are faced with paying top dollar to sit in baseline seats, athletes will not always like what they hear or see coming from the stands. It’s up to security to deal with that. Just as Messrs. Jordan, James and the generations of NBA icons who navigated the noise before them.
