Mamdani’s Concern for Jewish New Yorkers

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who gained political stardom by spewing socialist slogans and anti-Israel bilge, is voicing concern for Jewish New Yorkers. Fetch the smelling salts. The mayor is unveiling this week a new plan that he boasts is the “first-ever municipal strategy to combat antisemitism.” First? We wonder why such predecessors as, say, Mayors La Guardia, Koch, and Bloomberg needed no particular strategy to confront the world’s oldest hatred. A launch at City Hall featured some of Mayor Mamdani’s top supporters and aides waxing poetically on the evils of hatred of Jews. One missing word was “Israel” — a country Mr. Mamdani abhors. The event reminds us of a scene from Charlie Chaplin’s 1921 silent film “The Kid.” Chaplin sends his titular adopted child to strike at window panes with a slingshot. The Tramp then appears on the scene as a glazier, to fix the damage for a fee. Mr. Mamdani has let the antisemitic dogs out. He accused the Jewish state of committing “genocide,” “ethnic cleansing,” and other unspeakable crimes. He threatened to dispatch the New York Police Department to execute an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against the prime minister of the Jewish state. While marching with every ancestry group in the city, he blatantly steered clear of the Israel Day Parade. Yet the mayor now claims to want to protect a city population from those who heard his hateful rhetoric. Those who attack Jewish New Yorkers somehow miss Mr. Mamdani’s suggestion that their victims live on a separate planet from their brethren in the Jewish state. “From the river to the sea Palestine shall be free” was chanted in upstate New York this week in an event for Hizzoner’s fellow Democratic Socialist, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.Here’s another rhyme: At this news it seems Jews are not amused. In Mr. Mamdani’s first year as mayor, the NYPD marked an 8 percent increase over 2025 in anti-Jewish attacks. Anti-Jewish incidents account for 57 percent of all hate crimes even as Jews are but 12 percent of the city’s population. Mr. Mamdani, a Shiite, panders to the 12 percent of the city that are Muslims. Yiddish has long been part of New York, but the mayor prefers “inshallah.”“Jewish New Yorkers have helped build this city, shaped its culture, and strengthened our communities for generations,” Mr. Mamdani noted this week. “They deserve to be safe, celebrated and protected by a city government that stands with them.” Inshallah, but some Jewish New Yorkers are heading for the exits. Many remain in the larger area, moving to Long Island suburbs or across the Hudson to New Jersey. Others prefer sunny Florida. Between November 2025 and July 2026, Nefesh B’Nefesh, a group helping emigration to Israel, received 1,936 new applications from New Yorkers wishing to move there — a 31 percent increase in such requests from the pre-Mamdani era. Far be it from us to encourage New Yorkers to leave their city, but we can imagine their motivation. When a habitual political pyromaniac is assuring Jewish New Yorkers of his firefighting abilities, skepticism is in order.
