Berlin Police Kill Suspect in Islamic State-Inspired Attack on Pride Festival

German police on Sunday killed a man wanted for an attack on a Berlin Pride Festival the night before that left one dead and 29 injured in what is being decried as another failure to rein in Islamic terrorism in the German Republic. The suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, rammed his van into the crowd and stabbed an individual at the Tiergarten Park at Berlin, where hundreds of thousands had gathered nearby for the multi-day annual Christopher Street Day Pride event. Police said they found Ballout at 6:00 p.m. local time Sunday at an apartment complex at nearby Spandau. “According to current findings, he is said to have rushed toward our emergency forces with a stabbing weapon, after which police firearms were used by our (Special Task Force) Berlin. Despite immediate resuscitation measures initiated by the Berlin Fire Department, he died at the scene,” local police said in a statement after the daylong pursuit.Ballout, who was 21 and of Lebanese descent, was known to police as a repeat offender for aggravated assault and extortion. In 2025, he attempted to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State but was arrested in Lebanon and imprisoned before being extradited to Germany. Back home, a district court convicted him as a youth and sentenced him for plotting a terror attack. He remained in detention until May 2026, when he was released on probation and ordered to attend a deradicalization program. According to unverified reports, Ballout attended just two of the 26 sessions he was required to attend with another one scheduled for Monday. “Should the reported details prove accurate, the gap between the known risk and this lenient handling is hard to reconcile with basic public-safety priorities,” an associate fellow at the International Center for Counter-Terrorism, Adrian Shtuni, wrote on X.“Treating a person who had already shown intent and action toward joining ISIS mainly as a youth-rehabilitation case raises serious questions,” he added.Saturday’s incident was a shock to many in Germany who pride themselves on being an open and inclusive nation despite a tenfold increase in attacks on the gay and queer community between 2010 and 2025.“I was wearing my rainbow-colored shirt, carried a banner at the parade saying ‘Why are some people afraid of love but not of hate?’,” an attendee of the festival Ali Darwich, who is a gay, Muslim police officer, told the Associated Press. He said he did not know about the incident until after it occurred and friends called to check in on him. “We can’t get rid of the hatred some people feel, and it’s just getting worse and worse,” he added. At the same time, Islamist extremism in Germany is also on the rise after Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, with several groups looking to recruit on the back of the war in Gaza. Security officials estimate about 9,100 radicalized individuals live in Germany with about 1,200 having traveled abroad to receive weapons training. An investigative journalist and acclaimed author, Gerald Posner, called the latest incident “another embarrassing failure of Western intelligence and security services.”“They keep repeating the same pattern: identifying the threat, then not taking it seriously until blood is spilled. These failures advertise opportunity. Iran’s Islamic regime, already weighing asymmetric (aka terrorism) responses after U.S. and Israeli strikes, is watching,” he wrote on X.Ballout had followed several previous incidents of Islamists using vehicles to ram crowds in terror-related attacks. While Chancellor Merz did not mention the Islamist connection while expressing his condolences, several others noted the irony of LGBTQIA+ community demonstrating solidarity with causes or groups that would not tolerate their lifestyles. “The Islamist attack that struck Berlin’s Pride reminds us of a truth that some still refuse to see: Islamism is a totalitarian ideology that wages war against our freedoms, against our democracies, and against all those who refuse to submit to its obscurantism,” said France’s Marine Le Pen.
