Bot Traffic Surpasses Human Activity Online for the First Time

For the first time in internet history, traffic generated by artificial intelligence bots and agents has overtaken traffic from human users — and it happened sooner than anyone expected.According to Cloudflare, one of the world’s largest internet hosting services, bots now account for 57.4 percent of online requests, compared to 42.6 percent from humans. The shift, which accelerated sharply over the last six months, caught even industry insiders off guard.“Welp, that happened faster than I predicted,” the Cloudflare co-founder and CEO, Matthew Prince, wrote on X. “Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history.”The surge is driven by the rapid proliferation of AI agents — largely autonomous programs that interact with websites and data with minimal human input. Unlike a human who might visit five websites before making a purchase, an AI service might crawl 5,000.Mr. Prince told NBC News he remains “stunned by the rate of growth” of non-human traffic and warned it could have far-reaching consequences for how the internet operates. Among the most pressing concerns: bots don’t click on ads, threatening the web’s dominant business model.One proposed solution is charging bots for access to content created by human users. If implemented correctly, Mr. Prince said, “we actually might be on the cusp of the golden age of the internet” — one where the web is free again for humans.The news has reignited debate around the so-called “dead internet theory,” which suggests AI will eventually render human content irrelevant. Mr. Prince pushed back on the idea, arguing that AI has actually democratized content creation by removing the need for coding or design skills.Meanwhile, President Trump said he is likely to meet soon with major AI companies at the White House to discuss a federal “partnership” that could see Americans share in the financial upside of AI development.“There’s so much money and it’s so big that there are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner with the companies,” Mr. Trump told reporters Friday.The idea has been floated by OpenAI, broadly discussed by Anthropic, and echoed in a recent bill proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders that would give the government a 50 percent ownership stake in AI companies.“Since AI is built on the collective knowledge of humanity, the wealth it generates must benefit humanity,” the Vermont independent wrote, rather than benefiting the founders of leading AI companies or “venture capitalists in Silicon Valley or money managers on Wall Street who undoubtedly see AI as the next great wealth-extracting machine.”
