Britain Has Become Two Nations in One

Establishment politicians in Britain, as in the United States, are used to the charge that they’re out of touch with the country. In most ways, they are. Obsessed with moral posturing, they tend to ignore public demands for policies outside the Overton window of society dinner parties. As even a stopped clock is right twice a day, the Westminster Old Guard has unintentionally captured the mood of the nation. One can take a look at the governing Labour Party’s annual conference, and what one sees is a party ill at ease with the nation it rules. Nature Minister Jenny Riddell-Carpenter was recorded telling attendees about “warm ale, a black Labrador by your feet in a pub.” Precisely the sort of thing one might see in the rural seat she represents, and precisely what one might expect the nature minister to approvingly discuss as a pleasant feature of the English countryside. For Ms. Riddell-Carpenter, however, this was “a very far-Right nostalgic vision of Britain that we don’t want to have, and never really existed.” It’s both absurd and sinister; a completely innocuous image laden with symbolic evil simply because it represents an old-fashioned vision of England, and an old-fashioned vision of England is precisely what Labour would like to keep out of voters’ minds.If people were to start thinking about how Britain was, for instance, they might ask how it came to be that the police force could bar fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending a football match over fears that local “communities” would “arm themselves” if Israelis were in attendance. They might ask why, in the streets around Villa Park, 70 percent of the population identifies as Muslim, while literally across the road the share drops to 5 percent. If Britain has always been diverse, why is it so tense? Why are communities living parallel lives in voluntary segregation? Such questions are uncomfortable territory for the left. They break the doublethink of a country where nothing has changed, and where everything must change in order to adapt. Uncomfortable as they are, the pace and scale of change has made them unavoidable. Net migration between 2021 and 2024 ran at a stunning 2.5 million people in a population which started the period at 67 million. Now parts of the British Right are locked in a bout of furious infighting over the question of what it means to be “English,” while the British Left is gradually cohering around a policy of “business as usual.” The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, is opening a “resettlement” scheme to fly Afghans and Palestinians to Britain, after weeks of outrage over small boat arrivals, and an entire national news cycle driven by a previous resettlement scheme, even as reforms to settlement rules are picked apart by Labour MPs. What the two arms of British politics have in common with each other, and with the public, is that no-one is happy with Britain as it is. Prime Minister Andy Burnham began his speech today by stating that “Britain has been on the wrong path for a long time.” Taken in isolation, and shorn of the policy prescriptions surrounding it, that phrase might be the most unifying thing he’s said since taking office.This is a country ill at ease with itself. The debacle of the arrests outside the Royal Air Force base at Fairford and the statement that all involved were “UK nationals” was immediately followed by skeptics on social media demanding to know what kind of UK national they were. Were they British by birth, or by naturalisation? Were they Christians, or were they Muslims?Meanwhile, crowds of men in balaclavas are blockading ports where lifeboats bring in asylum seekers from the Channel, forcing the crews to dock elsewhere. Previous flare-ups in dissent have been met with increasingly repressive tactics by a state petrified of the prospect of losing control, desperately hoping that if discussion or dissent can be quashed, the problem will go away. Housing Minister Angela Rayner’s call for a ban on these protests suggests that the playbook hasn’t changed.Seemingly silly rows about history and culture are simply an extension of these debates. Britain has become two nations in one, and two nations that can no longer exist in parallel. One vision will have to win out over the other. Either we maintain a continuity with the labradors, pubs, and history of the country before 1945, or we manufacture a new identity to go along with our new population. The only question remaining is which path will win out.
