British Greens Bring Back ‘Zionism Is Racism’

The adoption by Britain’s Green Party on Sunday of a resolution equating Zionism with racism confirms that the party is a threat to British Jews — and to the best of Blighty. The motion passed on Sunday at the party conference at Brighton by a margin of 1,022 votes to 813. The motion endorses a “single democratic Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine.” Meaning a Judenrein Middle East. Chants of “Palestine will be Arab” were heard.Even the BBC reckons that the vote “raised concerns about the safety of Jewish members in the Green Party, as well as the implications for Jewish institutions in areas represented by the Greens.” The Greens also voted down a clause that would have clarified that the motion should not be used to “pressure, proscribe or discipline” party members for their affiliation to Zionist synagogues. Jews reportedly wept after the votes were cast.The Greens are the first mainstream European party to equate Zionism with racism. Their endorsement of the pernicious proposition comes some 50 years after United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3379, which declared that “Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination.” America’s envoy at Turtle Bay, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, thundered that “a great evil has been loosed upon the world.”While Resolution 3379 was repealed* in 1991, the slander that Jewish self-determination is intrinsically evil flourishes among the global left. The leader of the Greens, Zachary Polanski — Jewish himself — did not vote on the motion, but also did not condemn it. One Jewish Green told the Mail on Sunday that the atmosphere at the conference grew so menacing that “We have been given a ‘safe room’ for Jewish members to use in an emergency.”Israel’s foreign ministry declares in a statement that the “Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle.” Jerusalem thunders “Today, the Green Party in Britain ceased to act as a political party and became a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism” and contends that the resolution stands “as a stain on the history of the United Kingdom.” These columns warned in February that “Mr. Polanski, at the head of a red-green alliance” — meaning a coalition of Marxists and Islamists — “has the wind at his back.” The state of emergency for British Jews, though, is not limited to the Greens. His Majesty’s government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, is consumed by antipathy toward the Jewish state. Foreign Minister Ed Miliband is pandering to Labour’s most implacable enemies of Israel.All of this lends ballast to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s declaration last week that Mr. Burnham’s Labour party, “in order to ingratiate itself with its political base, has gone rogue.” The Israeli premier accused London of engaging in “mind-blowing hypocrisy” for imposing sanctions on Israeli settlements even after Jerusalem provided London with counterterrorism intelligence regarding an impending attack at an RAF base.One Jewish member of the Greens, Elise Benjamin, told the Telegraph on Sunday that “I don’t understand how this helps Palestinians? All this is, is an attack on Jews.” The same can be said for, say, the desecration of the statue of Winston Churchill at Parliament Square — the attacker was acquitted — and the assault on a portrait of Lord Arthur Balfour at Cambridge, where no charges were brought despite video footage.While the rise of anti-Israel politics in Britain is a particularly odious repudiation of the memories of Churchill, Balfour, and Benjamin Disraeli, it is also but one instance of how anti-Zionism is becoming the preeminent galvanizing force for the global left. The delusion that Zionism is racism is held — if not so baldly stated — by the likes of Mayor Zohran Mamadani and others now at the van of the Democratic Party.
