Brooklyn’s Oldest Lesbian Bar Scales Back Pride Month Events Over Noise Complaints in Pro-Mamdani Park Slope

The oldest lesbian bar in Brooklyn has cancelled a majority of its upcoming Pride Month events due to “ongoing noise concerns” from neighbors in a rapidly gentrifying Park Slope. In an Instagram post on Monday, Ginger’s Bar, which operated in Park Slope for 26 years, said it made the “difficult decision to cancel the majority of our DJ events” over noise complaints from its well-heeled neighbors. “As much as we love turning up the music and creating space for queer joy, we also want to remain respectful of the neighborhood we have called home for the past 26 years, and our space that has been a neighborhood bar for over 100 years,” Ginger’s Bar said in its post. A New York Community Emergency Response Team volunteer told The Park Slope Walk that Ginger’s Bar’s Pride Month festivities drew crowds that got “so rowdy that barricades were introduced.”Ginger Bar’s decision to cancel the festivities left some commenters to point the finger at those neighbors responsible for Park Slope’s “gentrification” — even though the neighborhood voted overwhelmingly in favor of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.“Can’t they just go to the Hamptons for the summer anyway?” wrote one commenter in Ginger’s Bar’s Instagram post. Last year, Ginger’s Bar, known as a “mainstay of Brooklyn’s lesbian life,” celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting three pride events — all of them with DJs, according to a Reddit post.
