Country Music Star Ella Langley’s Deer Hunt Puts Her in Liberal Haters’ Crosshairs

Country music’s biggest breakout sensation, Ella Langley, has broken several Billboard chart records, surpassing milestones set by stars including Beyoncé and Mariah Carey. So it was only a matter of time before embittered online trolls searched for something to cancel her over. What they found was an old photo of camouflage-clad Ms. Langley posing with a deer she hunted. Somebody call PETA — a countrywoman was caught hunting wildlife! Hailing from rural Alabama, Ms. Langley, 27, studied forestry in college before she quit to pursue music in Nashville. She grew up around the outdoors and even used to practice singing to a pasture of cows on her family’s farm when she was younger. In entertainment and especially country music, authenticity is everything. Ms. Langley’s accent isn’t manufactured; her twang and drawl are the byproduct of her Dixie roots. She’s not feigning ruggedness — she’s got a redneck spirit and isn’t ashamed of it. The woman singing about the Smoky Mountain rain and Texas two-stepping actually comes from that life.In a resurfaced clip from CMA Fest 2024, Ms. Langley told a reporter that her dream hunt would be a “massive white tail,” for which she would use her .30-06 or .308 rifle to kill. Via Jason Kempin/Getty ImagesGrowing up in a region with strong hunting, ranching, and agricultural influences, Ms. Langley is likely more versed in land management than her detractors ever will be. Hunting is conservation, not cruelty. Rather than the senseless killing of an innocent creature, deer hunting is consistent with ecology. Whitetail deer reproduce quickly. Humans eliminated most of the predators that once kept them in check. Without wolves and mountain lions roaming across large parts of the country, deer will keep multiplying, and an overpopulated herd damages the habitat that other species depend on. Regulated hunting helps keep herds balanced. Ella Langley doesn’t have a reckless attitude about the sport, though. She recognizes its ethical concerns. An older clip of Langley posted by the Porch Light Unfiltered Instagram account on September 21 also showcased her humility. Asked about her biggest hunting mistake, Langley recalled an experience that “haunts” her, saying that “The biggest deer I ever killed, I never found.” She said that while she was in high school, she shot a buck but in her excitement moved too quickly to retrieve the animal and accidentally jumped it. The deer ran away, presumably very injured, before she could recover it. Langley called it “one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever learned deer hunting,” acknowledging that taking the life of any animal is a “serious thing.” Haters took the happy picture of Langley with the deer and painted her as a cavalier killer with no regard for the environment. But that’s not at all what she is. As for conservation efforts, hunters pay the majority of wildlife conservation through hunting-license fees and excise taxes on firearms and ammunition. There’s great economic benefit to having hunters in the woods. Since 1937, the Pittman-Robertson Act has put an excise tax on firearms and ammunition and sent the money to state wildlife agencies. Hunting licenses and deer tags generate revenue as well. That money funds the game wardens who catch poachers, the biologists who monitor herd health, and the land managers who maintain public hunting grounds. It is odd to decry someone for participating in the system that protects wildlife habitats. The backlash has been pronounced. One hater posted, “This disgusting industry plant, MAGA, zionist and now weird b—h is the same one all of you are listening to and supporting, and she’s suddenly topping every music chart out of nowhere.” Another wrote, “That’s really unfortunate, I hope she addresses it and learns from the past.”Moreover, we could reasonably guess that most of Langley’s online critics eat meat. This is a typical liberal elitist attitude — DoorDash the Chipotle, send for the Sweet Green but never ask where it came from. A deer that lived freely, was hunted legally, and was eaten by the hunter’s family has had a far better life, and likely a quicker end, than an animal raised in an industrial feedlot that provides the meat source for many grocery stores and fast food companies. Some people are devoted vegetarians and sincerely believe that killing animals for food is wrong. They diligently control their own diets to make sure they have zero meat footprint or cross-contamination out of principle. But the people attacking Langley are likely not asking the country to go vegan. They are objecting to the concept of recreational hunting while living comfortably inside a food system of mass production and convenience.Ella Langley and her father. InstagramThe timing of the cancellation campaign is telling. The deer photo was unearthed from Langley’s social media archives shortly after she went from obscure singer to sensation. The animal cruelty criticisms must be taken in the context of her breaking other female artists’ records across all of music, not just country. The first offense was that Langley shot into the mainstream by performing a genre already deemed by elite culture to be laced with bigotry. Also part of the outrage, I suspect, is a hostility to the values underlying hunting: self-sufficiency and providing for yourself. Hunting can bring home renewable protein that can feed a village. And hunting is considered a conservative-coded sport because it is inextricably linked to the Second Amendment. To like hunting, unless your weapon of choice is a bow, you have to like guns and support sportspeople exercising that right. Ella Langley with a goat. FacebookMs. Langley hasn’t backed down from her childhood hobby or denounced where she came from. She is genuine, and that’s why her fans, the self-professed “Ella Fellas” and a growing crowd of young women, show up to her concerts in droves. They have watched her go from dive bar gigs to arenas without her ever compromising her identity. Though she had a glamorous aesthetic rebrand, she has never kept hid her inner tomboy from her rough-around-the-edges personality and pastimes. Langley comes from a place where hunting is ordinary, legal, regulated, and good for the ecosystem. Nothing about her hunting betrays her values or her fans. She’s breaking the glass ceiling beyond music —she’s part of a growing cohort of new hunters who are women. And a woman who hunts deer with her father is not a scandal.
