Democrats Hold Leads in Two Key Senate Races, Poll Finds

A new poll from Fox News finds that Democrats are holding leads in two key Senate races this year, which will help determine control of the United States Senate. Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia and Iowa state representative Josh Turek are currently leading their Republican opponents by not-insignificant margins.Senator Chuck Schumer, who has faced unyielding criticism from fellow Democrats over the course of the last year, is looking to vindicate himself by building an unlikely new Senate majority. Thanks to President Trump’s unpopularity and the fundraising prowess of his candidates, Mr. Schumer may well get his wish.A new Fox News poll — one of the most accurate in the country, based on past performance — shows Messrs. Ossoff and Turek leading their Republican opponents. Mr. Ossoff leads the GOP nominee, Congressman Mike Collins, by a stunning 13 points even though Mr. Trump won the Peach State by just over two points in 2024. Mr. Collins has faced a number of scandals in recent months, including allegations that he improperly paid a top aide’s girlfriend for a no-show job, as well as a top campaign staffer mocking a woman for being a rape victim. According to the poll, Mr. Ossoff leads Mr. Collins by 65 points among black voters, 19 points among women, seven points among men, 37 points among voters under the age of 30, and 40 points among self-described moderates. Mr. Collins’ strongest base of support comes from rural whites, non-college educated Georgians, and self-described “MAGA” conservatives.Mr. Ossoff was once viewed as the most vulnerable Democratic incumbent this cycle, those his fundraising prowess and his overall popularity have many Republicans believing that he may not be unseated this fall. Even more concerning for Republicans is that Democrats in traditionally red states are now running ahead of their states’ respective partisan makeups, forcing GOP leaders to spend money defending friendly territory rather than go on the offensive against Democratic incumbents.One of those states which may soon end up drawing Republican attention — and, more importantly, money — is Iowa, which Mr. Trump won by more than 13 points in the last presidential election. Mr. Turek, a gold medal-winning paralympian who represents a red area in the state house, is now leading his Republican opponent, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, by four points. That four-point lead is outside of the three-point margin of error in the Fox News poll. Ms. Hinson has served in the House since 2021, and Mr. Turek has spent much of his time tying the congresswoman to Mr. Trump. According to the Fox News survey, 50 percent of Iowa voters are concerned that Ms. Hinson is “too close” to the president and his agenda. A recent Morning Consult poll found that Mr. Trump is seven points underwater in the Hawkeye State, which has faced an outsized economic impact as a result of Mr. Trump’s global trade war.
