Democrats Renew Demand for Investigations Into Trump Sons After Russian Oligarch Hosts Don Jr.’s Wedding Events

A new report detailing how a Russian oligarch hosted a pricey Caribbean party as part of Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration is tantalizing Democrats bent on launching new investigations into the family dynasty should they take control of Congress next year. Mr. Trump and his brother, Eric, — co-founders of the crypto firm World Liberty Financial — are prime candidates to be hauled before Congress if Democrats win a majority. The report published Monday by left-leaning investigative outlet, ProPublica, states that a Russian oligarch named Umar Kremlev, the head of the International Boxing Association and close ally of President Putin, paid more than $100,000 to put on events for the younger Donald and his wife, Bettina Anderson Trump during their three-day jaunt to the Bahamas in May following a private marriage ceremony. The new Mrs. Trump wrote in an Instagram post on Monday that the trip had already been planned for another weekend, as were their nuptials, but then both were moved so they ended up getting married right before the weekend getaway. She said Mr. Kremlev’s series of parties over the holiday was “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift” that had nothing to do with her husband’s last name. “It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from,” Ms. Trump wrote. “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.”A spokesman for Mr. Kremlev told ProPublica that Mr. Kremlev and Mr. Trump have been friends for a “couple” of years, but it’s his ties to Mr. Putin that have Democrats alarmed. As a sports magnate in the country, Mr. Kremlev has cultivated close ties with powerful members of the Russian government. In 2021, Mr. Putin declared that Mr. Kremlev’s company would oversee all bookmaking bets in Russia. As International Boxing Association president, Mr. Kremlev canceled all sponsorships for the outfit and instead had the operation financed and sponsored by Russia’s state-owned energy corporation, Gazprom. Mr. Kremlev is currently under Ukrainian sanctions for his alleged involvement in the abduction of Ukrainian children from occupied territories. The abduction scheme is allegedly being orchestrated by his sister-in-law. Just days before attending Mr. Trump’s wedding festivities, Mr. Kremlev accompanied Mr. Putin on a trip to Beijing.After the ProPublica report was published, Democrats demanded a new round of investigations into the Trump family, a probe whose likelihood is dependent on whether Democrats win control of either the House or Senate — or both — in November. “Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin fund Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas?” the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, Congressman Robert Garcia, asked on X. “Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers.”The Trump family’s international business dealings, including the eldest Trump and his brother’s involvement in cryptocurrency deals and government contract work, have been a key part of Democrats’ anti-corruption messaging this year. The president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner — an unofficial diplomatic envoy for Mr. Trump — is also likely to come under investigation given his work in the Middle East. Mr. Kushner manages billions of dollars’ worth of Saudi state funds through his investment firm. After Mr. Kushner had a private meeting with the House minority leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Mr. Jeffries promised to pursue every member of the Trump “cartel” if he is elected speaker in January.“I shouldn’t have to say it, but I am: No one is going to get a pass. We’re going to hold every single member of the Trump cartel accountable beginning on day one,” Mr. Jeffries said. “If you’re stealing from the American people, shortchanging the American people, or screwing over the American people, you’re going to be held accountable.”
