President Trump says that negotiators for the United States and Iran are on the brink of finalizing an agreement to end hostilities that have roiled world energy markets since February 28.The proposed deal was discussed in a high-stakes conference call Saturday between Mr. Trump and leaders of several regional nations. According to the president, the participants included the heads of state from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Bahrain and Pakistan.Writing on Truth Social after the call, which he described as “very good,” Mr. Trump said an agreement has been “largely negotiated, subject to finalization” by America and the other countries involved.A separate call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel also went “very well,” he wrote, adding that “final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed and will be announced shortly.” Among other provisions of the deal, the Strait of Hormuz “will be opened,” he wrote.Also Saturday afternoon, Vice President JD Vance made an unplanned return to the capital with his motorcade racing to the White House, as did motorcades carrying the secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, and the chairman of of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, according to social media posts.Sources familiar with the discussions say the latest proposal on the table includes a clear process to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a vital waterway for global energy supplies — along with the unfreezing of some Iranian assets currently held in foreign banks.In a phone interview with CBS News, Mr. Trump declined to provide specific details about the draft, but expressed optimism. “Every day it gets better and better,” he said, adding ahead of his call with foreign leaders, “I can’t tell you before I tell them, right?”Mr. Trump emphasized that the final agreement would ensure Iran’s enriched uranium is “satisfactorily handled” to prevent the nation from obtaining a nuclear weapon. “I will only sign a deal where we get everything we want,” he said, reiterating that he “wouldn’t even be talking about it” otherwise.To bridge the remaining gaps, Mr. Trump scheduled meetings later on Saturday with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss Iran’s latest offer. The president characterized his current stance as a “solid 50/50” on whether he will secure a “good” deal or “blow them to kingdom come.”He delivered a stark warning should the diplomatic route fail, saying, “I think one of two things will happen: either I hit them harder than they have ever been hit, or we are going to sign a deal that is good.” If an agreement is not reached, he added, “We’re going to have a situation where no country will ever be hit as hard as they’re about to be hit.”Simultaneously, regional intermediaries are reporting significant momentum. Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator, with its military describing more than 24 hours of meetings between its army chief, General Asim Munir, and senior Iranian officials at Tehran as “highly productive.” The Pakistani military stated, “The intensive negotiations over the last twenty-four hours have resulted in encouraging progress toward a final understanding.”Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, described the current draft as a “framework agreement,” saying the focus is on ending the war first and then addressing broader nuclear issues over a 30- to 60-day period. “Over the past week, the trend has been toward narrowing differences,” Mr. Baghaei said, according to CBS. “We will have to wait and see what happens over the next three or four days.”American officials echoed this cautious optimism. Speaking ahead of a formal dinner at the American Embassy at New Delhi, India, Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted at imminent developments.“There’s been some progress done, some progress made, even as I speak to you now, there’s some work being done,” Mr. Rubio said. “There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, in a couple days, we may have something to say, but this issue needs to be solved, as the president said, one way or another.”
