Dutch Officials Search Passengers From Israel For West Bank Goods That Carry Six Year Jail Sentence

Israel is suspending the diplomatic status of Dutch diplomats in the West Bank after the Netherlands implemented a ban on goods from what it considers illegal settlements in the West Bank and the Golan Heights.Last week, the Netherlands said that it would ban “all goods that have been obtained or manufactured wholly or partly” in what it considers illegal settlements. Under the law, travelers can face up to six years in prison and fine if they are found to have intentionally violated the law. Dutch officials said the ban applies to private passengers trying to bring back souvenirs, not just businesses trying to sell goods in the Netherlands. On Sunday passengers who arrived at Amsterdam on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv had their luggage searched for banned items, the Times of Israel reported.In response to the ban, Israel’s minister of foreign affairs, Gideon Sa’ar, wrote on X that the Jewish state told Dutch diplomats that they had seven days to hand in their diplomatic documentation.“If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests with the Palestinians, it may do so from Palestinian Authority territory, rather than from the territory of the State of Israel,” he said. “Any country that acts in a hostile and unilateral manner against Israel will lose influence and relevance in the region.”Dutch foreign minister, Tom Berendsen, called Israel’s response to the ban “unnecessary.”Mr. Berendsen insisted that the ban on goods was “not directed against Israel,” but said the Netherlands has an “obligation under international law not to contribute to an unlawful situation: the illegal settlements.” He added that the Dutch government is “considering the situation.”America’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, criticized the restrictions, writing on X, “There were some people from Netherlands in our church this morning who are flying back tomorrow [and] have to check their souvenirs to make sure they aren’t from Judea/Samaria-possible 6 [year] prison term.”“A Nativity set from Bethlehem could put you in prison! Insane,” he wrote — though it is unclear whether items from Bethlehem would count as it is not an Israeli settlement. Israel has maintained that the Golan Heights are part of the Jewish state and disputes the view that settlements in the West Bank are illegal.Amid the diplomatic feud over the ban on goods, the Dutch government has also faced criticism after a video went viral showing a Palestinian student at Maastricht University who reportedly claimed he was involved in Hamas’ October 7 massacre. In the since-deleted video, the student pointed at a TV screen and said, “October 7. This is me,” according to an Amsterdam-based outlet, the NL Times. The university’s Observant Online reported that the student has been temporarily banned from entering buildings on campus, attending classes, or taking exams. A university spokesman told the outlet that the measure was taken out of “concern[s] about the safety of the student himself, fellow students, and staff,” and said it should not be “seen as a punishment.”Canada, France, and the United Kingdom have announced bans on goods from settlements. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden also signaled their intention to impose restrictions on goods from settlements. Earlier this month, Israel ordered London to close the British Consulate at East Jerusalem. However, Israel has not taken similar actions against France or Canada.
