FBI Conducts New Ballot Search in Fulton County, Georgia, Home of 2020 Election Count Dispute Pursued by Trump

As the Justice Department tries to keep up on a multitude of cases, the FBI issued a new warrant at the Fulton County, Georgia, election office on Wednesday, collecting boxes of ballots from the 2020 election in an everlasting dispute over election fraud.A search was conducted at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center, the FBI’s Atlanta field office confirmed to The New York Sun, without offering details.“FBI Atlanta is executing a court authorized law enforcement action at 5600 Campbellton Fairburn Rd. Our investigation into this matter is ongoing so there are no details that we can provide at the moment,” it said in a statement.Reached by phone, the clerk of superior and magistrate courts, Che Alexander, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a large number of federal agents were taking ballot boxes from the warehouse where they are stored.“The FBI agents are here to get the 2020 ballots,” Ms. Alexander said. “They’re all here– trucks, everything.”The new facility, which opened in 2023, handles ballot counts and storage, but elections officials have long been at odds with the Trump administration. In 2020, President Trump and his allies accused the election board of falsifying the count after videos showed workers at the State Farm arena handling ballots after election observers left post-election night. Officials at the time said staff were scrambling to save the mail-in ballots still being counted after a water leak threatened to destroy them. Later audits by the county’s election office confirmed President Biden’s win in the election, a conclusion President Trump has long rejected. After years of accusations and lawsuits in both directions, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit in December accusing the county of ignoring subpoenas for 2020 records of ballots and signatures. Ms. Alexander, who is named in the suit, filed a motion to dismiss.At a December 9, 2025, Georgia State Election Board hearing, Fulton County’s attorney acknowledged that tabulator tapes for 315,000 early voting ballots were unsigned by county officials, which critics say proves the state illegally certified ballots that gave the victory to Joe Biden. Last week, President Trump warned that “people will soon be prosecuted for what they did” in the 2020 case, but he did not offer any details. Georgia election officials called the missing signatures a clerical error, not ballot fraud. In 2023, the Fulton County attorney, Fani Willis, attempted to prosecute Mr. Trump and 18 others for what she described as an illegal effort to overturn the election results, whose outcome hinged on the state of Georgia. That case was dismissed when Ms. Willis was disqualified after she was discovered to be in a romantic relationship with the prosecutor whom she had assigned to lead the case.Accusations of ballot mischief previously landed the president’s former attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in hot water. In December 2023, he was found guilty of defaming a mother-daughter election worker team and was ordered to pay $148 million. He later was found in contempt after a federal court punished him for not handing over his assets to the woman. Mr. Giuliani also reached a defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems for claiming the election machines used in the state of Georgia were faulty.The FBI search comes as the Department of Justice deals with a wrath of cases of its own making, raising claims that it is underwater on delivering prosecutions and convictions. On Tuesday, the department filed a request with a U.S. District Court to extend a missed deadline to deliver millions of files to Congress regarding the case of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. On Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was on the ground at Minneapolis where federal agents arrested 16 Minnesota rioters for allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement officers conducting raids on illegal immigrants. She said more arrests were to come.A Georgia Democratic state senator, Josh McLaurin, said the timing of the raid, is meant as a distraction from events in Minnesota.“Donald Trump is an illusion artist and he’s an entertainer, and when things go bad for him, he tries to change the subject,” said Mr. McLaurin, who accused the FBI of taking more boxes than the warrant permitted and not securing the chain of custody.“So this weekend we saw the entire country in an uproar about the violation of Alex Prett’s Second Amendment and First Amendment rights that has created a huge political problem for Donald Trump, and so it’s no surprise to me that the very next week, while we’re still talking about that loss, while we’re still talking about ICE and Border Patrol overreach, that he swoops in with the FBI to create this spectacle here in Fulton County, which again, is his favorite punching bag,” he said.
