Georgia Elects First Black Female Governor in America

It was a good night for Democrats across America, with Ohio, Texas, and Georgia all seeing a pair of wins for governor and senator. In Georgia, the gubernatorial win was historic. The former Atlanta mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, is the first Democrat to win the top office in Georgia in more than a quarter century, and the first black woman ever elected governor in the country.Ms. Bottoms defeated billionaire Republican Rick Jackson, who spent more than $200 million of his own money in the race. He had assailed her record as mayor but failed to sway voters with a reason to turn to him.Ms. Bottoms, on the other hand, ran on a message that she would stand up to President Trump. “Georgia, we sent a message loud and clear that we want a leader who will put Georgia first and who will stand up to all the chaos coming out of Washington, D.C.,” Ms. Bottoms told supporters at her victory party.Ms. Bottoms has promised to seek expanding Medicaid and raising the state minimum wage to $15 an hour. She also latched on to the anti-data center movement and ran on a position that their development should be paused in the state.Mr. Jackson told dejected supporters that he respected the decision of voters.Ms. Bottoms will replace Republican Governor Brian Kemp who could not run for reelection because of term limits. Democrats Josh McLaurin won the lieutenant governor race, Penny Brown Reynolds is the incoming secretary of state, and Tanya Miller emerged victorious in the attorney general’s race.Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, who has been eyeballed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, also won reelection to the Senate, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins. Mr. Ossoff was the only Democratic senator seeking reelection in a state that Mr. Trump carried in 2024.“The American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame duck president Donald J. Trump,” Mr. Ossoff said at a victory celebration. While Democrats have notched several recent congressional wins, they have struggled in state house elections with the Republican party holding the majority in both the Georgia House and Senate for decades. Only the state House was believed to be in danger of flipping in the midterm election but it was too early to call the party in control by early Wednesday morning.
