Get the Tequila Ready: Formula 1 Sensation Kimi Antonelli, 20, Is Set To Make Sporting History in Mexico

The rise of Kimi Antonelli from teenage prodigy to Formula One’s dominant driver is among the biggest stories in global sports this year, putting the 20-year-old Italian on the verge of making history while helping to fuel the sport’s growing popularity. The Mercedes driver captured the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin on Oct. 25 for his ninth victory of the season, moving into a commanding position to become the sport’s youngest world champion in only his second season. With a 123-point lead over teammate George Russell and a 124-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton, Mr. Antonelli can clinch the championship at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix if he finishes ninth or better, depending on the result of his rivals.Should Mr. Antonelli complete the job, he would surpass Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years old when he won his first championship in 2010, as Formula 1’s youngest title holder. Mr. Antonelli would also become the first Italian to win the coveted driver’s championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953.For a sport that has spent years cultivating younger fans and expanding its international reach, the emergence of a young Italian champion could hardly be better timed. Mr. Antonelli, however, is trying not to let the historical significance become a distraction. After the Austin victory, he said, he is simply “trying to have fun, hopefully fight for another win. It would be best to finish well.”Awesome in AustinMr. Antonelli, who turned 20 in August, strengthened his grip on the championship in Austin with a performance that left even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff searching for superlatives.Starting from pole position, Mr. Antonelli seized control early and executed a one-stop strategy with the composure of a veteran, crossing the finish line 13 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen drove Red Bull to third place, while Mr. Hamilton and Ferrari settled for fourth. Mr. Russell, Mr. Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate, was eighth. The victory reaffirmed Mr. Antonelli’s dominance in a year where he finished second to Mr. Russell in the season opener in Australia, then won five consecutive races before enduring his only “did not finish” at Barcelona in mid-June. He entered Austin with eight total wins, but no better than a third in his previous three races. Any talk of a slump was ended by his performance in Austin.“The race of a champion who isn’t the champion yet,” Mr. Wolff told the media in Austin, adding, “I’m happy to say that it is 99.9 percent done, but he still needs to finish the race in Mexico.”Changing the DemographicMercedes isn’t the only one enjoying the fruit of Mr. Antonelli’s success. His combination of speed, boyish charm and engaging personality has made him a compelling figure that is reaching audiences beyond the sport’s traditional fan base.As early as July, F1 reported that all of its first 11 races had sold out, drawing nearly 3.7 million spectators, compared to 3.4 million at the same time in 2025. Six of the stops set new attendance records. Television ratings were up in several major markets, including Italy where viewership was up 27 percent from the previous year. The sports demographic profile has also experienced an interesting change. Formula 1 has reported that women account for 42 percent of its audience and three-quarters of news fans. Meanwhile, 43 percent of the overall fan base is now younger than 35. The impressive numbers from ratings to demographics come at a time when F1 is expanding, beginning with adding the African Grand Prix in 2030.Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali, himself Italian, has welcomed Mr. Antonelli’s impact. “He is fresh, brings something genuinely new to Formula 1, and he is open to everything that comes his way.” Mr. Domenicali told F1.com. “He has brought a lot of new fans connected to him because the nature of his way of engaging is fantastic. He’s added a new dimension. For now, I am just very pleased with the way he commits to the sport. I have known him for a very long time and he is clearly a huge asset for the future.”In today’s world of expanding platforms, it is helpful for Formula 1 to have a young driver comfortable with the demands of global fame and the attention of social media where he has 10 million followers, up from six million in May. Yet, Mr. Antonelli already understands that celebrity has its costs. He has acknowledged that there are times when he would prefer to go out to dinner without being recognized, but he also understands that public attention is part of being a professional athlete.“As long as you’re able to embrace these moments, I think it’s also very nice and very enjoyable,” he said. “At the same time, I know it’s part of it, and I’m very happy this way.”No overnight sensationMr. Antonelli might be in only his second season of F1 racing, but his development has been years in the making.Mercedes added him to its junior program in 2019, when he was a teenager, and guided him through Formula 4, Formula Regional and Formula 2 before promoting him to its Formula One team in 2025 when Mr. Hamilton left to join Ferrari. That promotion came with considerable pressure. Mr. Antonelli’s rookie season included a lengthy stretch without points, and critics questioned whether he was ready to compete at the sport’s highest level.Mr. Wolff recalled the criticism and the emotional strain Mr. Antonelli experienced during difficult moments.“People don’t get that this is the work of nine years, the development and hardship of nine years, the integration into the team,” Mr. Wolff said, citing the time and financial investment in Mr. Antonelli’s driving, character, and preparation, along with the support of his family and Mercedes engineers. “Many people said last year, after nine races without points, that he shouldn’t be at Mercedes, and people in other teams said that he shouldn’t be in Formula 1.”Now he has proven his doubters wrong, entering the Mexican Grand Prix with 15 podium appearances in 18 races with nine wins, three seconds, and a trio of thirds.Get the tequila readyThe age for legal drinking in Texas is 21, making Mr. Antonelli too young to indulge in the victory champagne on the podium in Austin. In the cool down room, Mr. Verstappen suggested a celebration with “some tequila” if the Italian clinches the driver’s championship in Mexico City.Mr. Antonelli replied with a smile and a nod of approval.A celebration is certainly in order for someone who has increased F1 attendance to record levels, expanded television audiences in major markets, and attracted a younger and more diverse demographic. He’s also getting rich in the process. Estimates published by Forbes placed Antonelli’s 2025 earnings at $12.5 million, including a reported $5 million base salary and $7.5 million in performance bonuses. That is a substantial return for a driver in his first Formula One season, but a drop in the bucket if he secures a championship and becomes an even more valuable commercial partner. The sport’s established superstars provide a sense of his potential financial windfall. Mr. Verstappen’s reported 2025 earnings reached approximately $76 million, while Mr. Hamilton’s were estimated at $70 million. Those figures reflect years of success, lucrative contracts and commercial appeal, but Mr. Antonelli’s trajectory could bring him closer to that tier faster than anyone could have anticipated.
