Governor Sherrill To Launch Online Portal for New Jersey Citizens To Submit ICE Videos

Setting herself up with a clash with the Trump administration, Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey says her new administration will set up an online portal for residents to upload videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents carrying out operations in their neighborhoods.“If you see an ICE agent in the street, get your phone out. We want to know,” Ms. Sherrill said in a Wednesday appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”Ms. Sherrill compared ICE operations to the secret police she experienced in countries during her Navy career.“We saw people in the street with masks and no insignia,” Ms. Sherrill said. “So not accountable at all, hiding from the population.”Ms. Sherrill also said her administration would not allow ICE raids to be staged from state properties.“We are putting out information helping New Jerseyans know their rights,” Ms. Sherrill said.More details on the portal — including when it would launch — were not immediately available.“Keeping New Jerseyans safe is Gov. Sherrill’s top priority, and in the coming days she and Acting Attorney General Davenport will announce additional actions to protect New Jerseyans from federal overreach,” the governor’s office said in a statement to NJ.com.Attorney General Letitia James set up a similar portal in New York in October the day after an ICE raid on Canal Street in New York City.“Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation,” Ms. James said in a release. “If you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and assessing any violations of law. No one should be subject to unlawful questioning, detention, or intimidation.”Ms. Sherrill has been a vocal critic of President Trump. She criticized the ICE operation in Minnesota after agents killed a second person this month.Alex Pretti’s death is a tragedy – and the result of a reckless operation,” Ms. Sherrill said in an X post. “These untrained, masked agents aren’t making communities safer – they’re occupying cities, inciting violence, and violating the Constitution.”“There must be accountability for their lawless actions,” Ms. Sherrill added.The man now in charge of the ICE operation in Minnesota, “border czar” Tom Homan, asked for “hostile rhetoric” surrounding ICE to be toned down.“ICE and CPB officers are carrying out their duties in challenging circumstances,” Mr. Homan said at a Thursday news conference. He added that if local authorities worked with ICE to allow agents to take targets for deportation into federal custody inside jails, it would be safer for everyone involved.“ICE officers are facing a 1300% increase in assaults because of dangerous, untrue smears by elected Democrats,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in an emailed statement. “ICE officers act heroically to enforce the law and protect American communities and local officials should work with them, not against them.”
