Great Britain, Embracing Islam, Leaves Christians To Wonder Where They Fit in a Shifting Culture

From King Charles III to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the United Kingdom is celebrating and protecting citizens of the Muslim faith. As that group grows — passing 6 percent of the population — Christians are reassessing how they fit into a shifting culture where versions of Muhammad are now the most popular name for boys.On Monday, the Evangelical Alliance released “Confident Faith, Contested Culture” on data collected across the U.K. While 88 percent of respondents said they can “freely live their faith,” 48 percent said that “it has become harder” to do so “publicly in the past five years.”Forty-seven percent of British Evangelicals felt “societal pressure to conform to activities conflicting” with their beliefs. Sixty-five percent had confronted “hostility” and 44 percent “verbal abuse.” High-profile “hate speech” cases increase the unease.In December, a U.K. court upheld the right to criticize Islam, rebuking Sir Keir’s Labour Party which hoped to criminalize “Islamophobia.” Few want the hassle of a trial. Better to err on the side of silence — although one Christian, Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, was charged in 2022 for silent prayers near an abortion clinic.“Fear of misunderstanding,” the Christians Evangelical Alliance stated, “being labelled intolerant,” or “jeopardizing professional relationships leads some Christians to self-censor or withdraw.” There’s been a chilling effect from cases like the English pastor, Clive Johnston, who will hear his judgment related to a 2024 sermon in two weeks.The Christian Institute calls Mr. Johnston’s prosecution a “shocking” attack on freedom of religion and speech. Two other pastors, Dia Moodley of Nigeria and Stephen Green, have been charged with “public order offenses” for preaching about topics like transgenderism, abortion, and Islam.Symptomatic of the cultural shift is the government’s vocal support for Islam and comparative silence on Christianity. “Wishing all Muslims in the U.K., the Commonwealth, and around the world,” the Royal Family tweeted in February, “a blessed and peaceful Ramadan — #RamadanMubarak.”This was contrasted with the 2025 Easter message by King Charles that omitted any mention of the Resurrection. He said instead that Christ had “a deep human instinct echoed in Islam and other religious traditions, and in the hearts of all who seek the good of others.” Nothing distinctive about Christianity was celebrated, reducing Christ to a generic do-gooder.A member of Parliament, Richard Tice, tweeted last month that after “nice messages at Eid and Ramadan,” Christians were “looking forward to a warm Easter message from King Charles III in his role as Defender of the Faith of the Church of England.” Yet the sovereign skipped even last year’s secularized push for altruism.Queen Elizabeth II’s chaplain, Gavin Ashenden, scolded King Charles on YouTube. “It’s Easter, your majesty,” he said. “Christ is risen. Try saying it, perhaps, to your subjects … to encourage them to live the faith.” Instead, he said, the king “uses Christmas as a platform for celebrating” everything from Islam to Hinduism, instead.King Charles, for his coronation in 2023, swore a new pledge “to foster an environment in which people of all faiths and beliefs may live freely.” This put into practice his much-criticized statement as prince in 1994 that he’d prefer to change the sovereign’s role to “defender of faith” in general, leaving the church to fend for itself.On Thursday, Saint George’s Day, Sir Keir posted on X that Saint George’s flag featuring a red cross on white, “stands for unity over hatred.” It’s also the banner of England. “Some try to hijack our flag to spread hate,” he said. “I reject their plastic patriotism.” At No. 10, he heralded it as a day of “service, generosity, and respect.”Saint George, the patron of England, was martyred in the year 303 for refusing to renounce Christ. For 1,000 years, April 23 was a celebration of English heritage, culture, and national identity. Like other Christian holidays, though, it was transformed into just another occasion for political preaching.Expect the U.K.’s secular leadership to be vocal about welcoming its growing Muslim population. That tolerance ought not omit Christians. As their numbers dwindle, followers of the faith that built the British Empire will need defenders, too.
