Greek Police Investigate Death of ‘Tehran’ Television Show Creator Dana Eden

Greek police are investigating the death of the co-creator and executive producer of the Emmy-winning Apple TV show “Tehran” after her body was found in an Athens hotel room as the show films its fourth season.Dana Eden, who was 52, was found by her brother after being out of contact for hours, Greek media reported, adding that Eden had bruises on her neck and lower limbs.Authorities, however, are looking into the possibility her death was a suicide. Police found pills at the scene, Reuters reported, and a Greek police official said there was no suspicion of foul play, according to the Associated Press.A coroner will perform an autopsy to determine her cause of death. Local police were collecting security camera footage from the hotel room as part of the investigation.“Tehran” centers on an Iranian-born, Israeli spy named Tamar Rabinyan. The first season of the show centered on Ms. Rabinyan being sent to Tehran to take out army radar systems to enable Israel’s air force to bomb Iran’s nuclear reactor. The following seasons have focused on other missions involving Ms. Rabinyan. Season Three started streaming on Apple+ last month.Eden’s death spawned unfounded reports that she had been killed — potentially by the Iranian government. Eden’s Israeli-based production company, Donna and Shula Productions, refuted those claims.“Rumors about criminal death or about a national background are not true and are not grounded,” the company said in a statement posted to Facebook. “We call on the media and the public to refrain from publishing unverified assumptions, and to behave responsibly and sensibly.”“Tehran” was initially produced for the Israeli public broadcaster Kan. “We are saddened by the passing of our friend and partner in a long line of productions, series and programs at the Israel Broadcasting Corporation – Dana Eden,” the broadcaster said in a statement. “Dana was among the senior figures in the Israeli television industry and was a central figure in the creation and leadership of some of the corporation’s most prominent and influential productions.”Athens is used as a stand-in for Tehran for the show, which won an Emmy for best drama in 2021. Iran does not have diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv and travel to Iran by Israelis is banned.Eden was the 2018 winner of the Israeli Television Academy award for the TV Magazine show “Saving the Wildlife” and a 2008 nominee for best documentary by the Israeli Film Academy.“Dana left a profound mark on Israeli creation and brought our story to international stages with pride, talent, and courage,” Israel’s minister of Culture and Sports, Miki Zohar, wrote in a post on X. “I share in the grief of the family, friends, and colleagues. May her memory be blessed.”
