Ireland Scraps ‘Demeaning’ Ad Warning Grandparents Against Hugging Their Grandchildren

An advertisement warning grandparents away from hugging their loved ones without consent has been pulled from the airwaves one day after its launch, with Ireland’s justice minister, Jim O’Callaghan, calling it “inappropriate and demeaning.” The heavil criticized commercial began circulating on social media on Wednesday. It depicts scenes that have occurred throughout time: two grandparents entering a home and quickly hugging one of their grandchildren. Meanwhile, another grandchild grimaces as they approach her with open arms.A narrator in the video declares, “Not everyone wants a hug. Even from the people who love them.”“Awkward? Maybe. Important? Absolutely,” the narrator adds.Mr. O’Callaghan said on X that the video “does not represent the views” of Ireland’s government. “It goes without saying that having loving grandparents in a child’s life is an incredibly positive thing to be cherished and not something to be campaigned against,” he said, adding that while understanding the “concept of consent” is important, the ad was “counterproductive.”The founder of Ireland’s socially conservative Aontú Party, former Sinn Fein leader Peader Tóibín, said on RTE’s Radio One that the ad was “planting the seed that a grandparent’s hug may be insidious and a suspicious activity.” He posted that the government “owes grandparents an apology.”A former Fingal councillor, Keith Redmond, called the decision to pull the ad a “timely intervention.” He added that the decision creates an auspicious moment “to audit the use of public funds by all activist NGOs. We waste way too much taxpayers money pushing the Woke agenda.”A former Irish foreign minister, Charlie Flanagan, wrote on X that Mr O’Callaghan’s statement was “welcome” and “decisive.” He also called on authorities to “rein in those responsible.”The ad was part of the “We-Consent” campaign, which was launched in 2023 by the Dublin Rape Crisis Center in partnership with Ireland’s Department of Justice. The campaign, which receives some of its funding from the government, is aimed at building “understanding of consent across all ages, relationships and situations.” Ireland’s government says that research conducted before the campaign launched found that 70 percent of people surveyed said they believed Ireland had a “problem with sexual consent.” Meanwhile, the Irish Times reported that 60 percent of respondents said they support the idea of the government getting involved to educate the public about consent. The chief executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Center, Noeline Blackwell, told the Irish Times in 2023, “We believe a greater understanding of consent will make our society more equal, happier, and healthier – as well as safer.”“We believe this campaign will spark long overdue conversations about the kind of values we want to define us and the meaning of equality within our culture – Ireland is ready for these conversations,” she said. But when the conversation extended to grandparents, several commentators ridiculed the idea of a government telling older family members not to hug their loved ones. “State trying to free you from the warm physical embrace of your own Gran,” A senior writer at National Review, Michael Brendan Dougherty, wrote on X. A co-founder of Europa News, Keith Woods, asked, “What can you even say about this? It’s impossible to parody our current leadership.”“These people are nuts,”added a conservative columnist at the Washington Post, Marc Thiessen. The rape crisis center reported in February that Ireland has a sexual offense rate that is 43 percent higher than the average rate across the European Union. The Central Statistics Office reported in 2022 that 29 percent of adults surveyed said they experienced sexual violence as a child, with the overwhelming majority of those stating that the violence was perpetrated by someone under age 18. The data do not provide information on the familial relationship between abusers and victims, though it does offer resources on how parents and caregivers should address the topic of consent with children, including bringing it up when watching dramatic depictions in movies or television. The sexual offense rate appears to be trending downward in Ireland. The State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security reported in July 2026 that sexual offenses in Ireland were down by roughly 15 percent compared to 2025. The center has partially attributed the higher percentage of sex offenses to greater public awareness and better reporting mechanisms.
