Jack White Invites ‘Satanic Doo-Wop’ Act To Play the Devil’s Music With Him

Self-proclaimed “satanic doo-wop” duo Twin Temple are counting their blessings Friday after rock star — and former aspiring priest — Jack White invited the pair to open for him at Los Angeles.The move follows an announcement yesterday that the sinister singers were no longer welcome on tour with Charley Crockett, an outlaw country performer whose singles include the tracks “Crucified Son” and “Fire and Brimstone.”“Twin Temple, Would you like to open my show in L.A. on September 29th at the Hollywood Palladium? Let me know. Get in front of me Satan!” White wrote in an Instagram post Friday that featured a picture of the performers, married couple Alexandra and Zachary James, in rockabilly garb with blood dripping from their mouths.Mrs. James was quick to accept the rock icon’s invitation. “Unholy hell…. Sir Jack, you have no idea what this means to us,” she wrote from the band’s social media account proclaiming the pair “lifelong fans” of his music. “It would be a most infernal pleasure to play the devils music with you,” she continued.Religious themes have long played a part in the music Mr. White composes and produces. The White Stripes’ catalogue includes a 2005 album titled “Get Behind Me Satan.” He also co-wrote and produced the track “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” the emotional climax of Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade, which features the line “When you love me, you love yourself / Love god herself.” The lyric prompted the singer to include text in the music video stating “God is God and I am not.”Mr. White wasn’t always so cavalier about religion. Raised Catholic, he has told several interviewers over the years that he was accepted into a seminary program as a teen. However, as he told 60 Minutes in 2005, he abandoned the vocation when he learned he couldn’t bring his amp.Twin Temple wrote in a post on Wednesday that Charley Crockett, the twice Grammy nominated singer behind the albums “$10 Cowboy,” and “Dollar A Day,” dropped them “due to our Satanic imagery.”Their act includes skulls, pentagrams and other gothic tropes. Set lists include tracks like “I Am a Witch,” “Black Magick,” and “Burn Your Bible.”The band went on to apologize to fans who had been hoping to see them, writing “We’re grateful for your support, not only of Twin Temple, but more importantly of artistic freedom. HAIL SATAN!”“I thought they were like Black Sabbath, but they ain’t. Not today, Satan,” Mr. Crockett told Rolling Stone in a statement following the announcement.
