Kemi Badenoch’s ‘Starship’

The Tories may be in the tubes, but their leader, Kemi Badenoch, appears to be finding her voice. That’s our impression following a bravura performance in the Commons this week. The rapper Nicki Minaj, a supporter of President Trump, shared a clip of Ms. Badenoch and declared that “They will portray her in film & TV one day… just like they did with Margaret Thatcher.” Ms. Badenoch said she found the comparison to be “flattering.” Ms. Badenoch added that she is a fan of Ms. Minaj’s hit track “Starship,” and it is the Conservative leader’s star that appears undimmed by her party’s poor performance in last week’s general elections across Britain. Reform UK was the big winner, and Labour crashed, losing some 1,460 council seats. The Tories also suffered losses, losing seats to both Reform and the Liberal Democrats. The party of Churchill is becoming a boutique outfit.Ms. Minaj, who also can boast of the achievement of “Anaconda,” was responding to Ms. Badenoch’s performance following the recitation of the King’s Speech. The leader of His Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition took aim at health secretary Wes Streeting’s ambitions for office. Ms. Badenoch swiveled to him and said “why don’t you just do your job? Do your job!” Mr. Streeting resigned shortly thereafter, declaring his loss of faith in Mr. Starmer.While that performance in the Commons — savage with a smile — instantly went viral, even more impressive was Ms. Badenoch’s clarity earlier this month on the scourge of antisemitism. At a rally following the stabbings of two Jewish men at Golders Green, she thundered that her country “must always be a sanctuary for Jewish people” and vowed to lead “a Britain where Jews can go to school and worship freely.” Ms. Badenoch inherited a conservative party that was booted from 10 Downing Street. Born at London to Nigerian parents, she spent part of her childhood at Lagos and tells of how she returned to Britain with 100 pounds in her pocket, working at a McDonald’s to put herself through school. She has described to the London Times that her politics were formed against “stupid lefty white kids who didn’t know what they were talking about.”The BBC marvels that despite the Conservatives losing some 500 seats it has become clear to “anyone who has been watching the Tories closely in recent weeks” that “Badenoch’s future would not be in doubt” despite the hemorrhaging of elected representatives. One possible challenger, Robert Jenrick, has defected to Reform. The BBC reckons that “when it comes to job security Kemi Badenoch appears much safer in her role than Sir Keir Starmer.” Another rapper, Azalea Banks, concurs with Ms. Minaj’s boosting of Ms. Badenoch, though the musicians have had “beef” despite being classmates at LaGuardia High School. Ms. Banks declared “Sorry I made fun of you guys in Britain, I rolled over and realized it’s actually no longer a laughing matter and I shouldn’t be making jokes. I hope you all vote Conservative and listen to Kemi Badenoch.” She adds that Ms. Badenoch is a “star.”
