King Charles Pledges ‘Support’ for Police Investigation Into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor

King Charles III is prepared to “support” a police assessment into claims that his brother, the former Prince Andrew, shared confidential trade information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.Buckingham Palace released a statement on Monday confirming the King’s stance, following reports that Thames Valley Police are “assessing” allegations that Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor sent trade reports to Epstein in 2010.The inquiry was launched after news organizations reported on uncovered emails suggesting the then-prince, during his time as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment, forwarded reports from a tour of Southeast Asia to the financier.“The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s conduct,’’ the palace statement read. “While the specific claims in question are for Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect.”The palace reiterated that the thoughts and sympathies of both the King and Queen Camilla “have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse.”Thames Valley Police, responsible for the area including Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s former Windsor home, confirmed receipt of a report from an anti-monarchy campaigner. Graham Smith, chief executive of the group Republic, reported the former prince for suspected misconduct in public office and breaches of Britain’s Official Secrets Act.“We can confirm receipt of this report and are assessing the information in line with our established procedures,” the police force said.The allegations stem from documents released last month by the Justice Department, which include correspondence that appears to show Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor forwarding visit reports for Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen to Epstein.The controversy continues to plague the royal family, which has sought to insulate itself from the scandal. King Charles stripped his brother of his royal titles last year.Prince William and Princess Catherine also issued their first statement regarding the recently released documents, with a spokesman saying, “I can confirm that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been deeply concerned by the continued revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims.”The public scrutiny was evident during the King’s visit to Lancashire on Monday, where a bystander was heard shouting, “How long have you known about Andrew?”Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, who has denied all wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, was recently forced to leave his longtime home at Royal Lodge. He is currently residing temporarily on the King’s private Sandringham estate.Prime Minister Keir Starmer also is caught up in the Epstein scandal following revelations regarding his appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.The controversy centers on Mr. Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein. Over the last 10 days, files have emerged suggesting that Mr. Mandelson, like the former prince, shared sensitive government documents from 2009 and 2010 with Epstein. Consequently, police are now investigating claims of misconduct in public office.Mr. Starmer fired the 72-year-old Mandelson last September after emails surfaced showing that the diplomat had maintained a friendship with Epstein following the financier’s 2008 conviction for sex offenses involving a minor.
