Knicks Championship Run Is Forcing Wedding Couples To Adapt

Couples, many of whom picked their wedding dates more than a year ago, are shelling out more money to incorporate the New York Knicks bid for an NBA title into their marriage celebrations to avoid having guests disappear into their phones at game time. After rallying from 29 points down to beat the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks can clinch their first championship since 1973 in Game 5 Saturday night at San Antonio.Amanda Hall, 26, and John Scarpelli, 28, according to a Bloomberg report, intentionally scheduled their 250-person wedding for a Saturday in June to avoid college football season. The couple reportedly spent $100,000 on a Long Island venue, food and decor. After the Knicks lost Game 3, Ms. Hall said, she started receiving phone calls from family and friends wanting to know if they would be able to watch Game 5 at the wedding. Initially, the couple thought they might put an iPad on the bar for interested guests. But after Wednesday’s stunning win, they have gone to the added expenses of adding televisions to the bar.“Johnny and I have put so much love and effort into planning this wedding over almost two years that I’m just embracing it at this point,” Ms. Hall said. “Everyone’s going to be really excited for the wedding, for us, and even more excited that this huge game is happening.”TikTok is flooded with videos of weddings held on Wednesday that turned into Knicks watch parties. Guests watched the game on their cell phones and one bride and groom donned Knicks jerseys while celebrating.Victoria Perry told Bloomberg she is spending several thousand dollars to alter her wedding afterparty into a mini-sports bar complete with a 70-inch television for the game. For an added touch, the native New Yorker has ordered Knicks-accented flower arrangements, team flags and pom-poms.Ms. Perry called the late adjustment “the best money we spent” for the 300-person wedding. “Basically, our whole afterparty is going to be a Knicks watch party,” she told Bloomberg. “The last quarter, we’ll have everyone watching.”June is the peak wedding season and the cost of luxury weddings in New York can easily reach more than $400,000. At those prices, not everyone wants to share their special day watching the Knicks or any other sports team, said the founder of New York-based Events, Jesse Richman-Reing.“Everyone’s giving the Knicks a shoutout,” she told Bloomberg. “But when people are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and their guests are coming in, they’re trying to still keep it about themselves.” That is proving easier said than done. Matthew Yale and Jessica Frank, both long-time Knicks fans, said the thought of sharing the Knicks on their big day felt like being hit by “bricks.” They have spent $40,000 on their wedding in the Adirondacks and aren’t going to make any pricey adjustments for the game.The DJ will announce score updates and a small TV at the bar will likely attract a crowd if the game is competitive. “On top of all the energy and effort we’ve put into the day, I think it would be really difficult to move things and change it just for the game,” Ms. Frank said in the Bloomberg report.Coupled with the start of the World Cup, the Knicks’ run toward a championship has caused logistical nightmares beyond wedding planning. Disruptions and delays to public transit, road closures and congestion have created daily headaches. One New Jersey bride reportedly missed her final dress fitting in New York City on Monday because of the traffic, Ms. Richman-Reing said.If the Knicks win the championship on Saturday, it will add to a wedding memory. If they lose, the wedding plans that coincide with Game 6 at the Garden on Tuesday had better add some big TVs.
