Mamdani’s Anti-American Fantasy Reflects Far Left’s Reliance on Alternative Facts

Count on America’s left to adopt Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s tactic of wrapping anti-American assertions in patriotic language to mislead voters about their real agenda. Feature, say, Mr. Mamdani’s deceptive speech about America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Hizzoner’s rhetoric is worth analyzing because it is a clear indication of how much the left must sell its fantasies to the public. The former Democratic presidential candidate and governor of New York, Al Smith, was famous for saying “look at the record.” If the radical left is forced to stick with the record and the facts, its complaints fall apart. The movement loses all of its moral righteousness and anger. Have no doubt about the core nature of the radical left: It has created an alternative reality with alternative facts. Its entire survival as a movement requires its adherents to hide from the truth and stick to the fantasy world they have constructed.The gap between Mr. Mamdani’s assertions and reality is well-marked by Victor Davis Hanson in the Daily Signal. Consider some examples from the mayor’s 250th anniversary speech.Mr. Mamdani asserted: “The powerful have always known their answer. America, in their view, is an arena of supremacy, where only a select few are allowed freedom, where not all are created equal. America, if you ask them, becomes less the more people it welcomes. America, they will tell you, belongs only to those with the right accent or the right shade of skin. The rest of us, they insist, should be grateful for merely being allowed to visit.”It is perplexing to hear Mr. Mamdani make such claims, especially in light of his own achievements, and his parents’ successful careers here in America. Viewed in a broader context, Indian-Americans as a whole have the highest median household income of any ancestry group, some $151,200 a year. Meanwhile, native born white Americans have a median annual income of $89,000. Mr. Mamdani’s anti-American view is that his opponents want “only those with the right accent or the right shade of skin.” Forget for the moment that Americans twice elected President Obama. Forget, too, that Henry Kissinger made a pretty good living with a clearly foreign accent. And that Vice President Harris, an African American woman, was the Democratic nominee for president and almost won in 2024.Consider Mr. Mamdani’s assertion that “only a select few are allowed freedom.” He is the mayor of our largest city. His endorsed candidates just defeated the establishment in three congressional primaries in New York City. Americans demonstrate across the country. Mr. Mamdani suggested the elites want us to “be grateful for merely being allowed to visit.” Remember this is from someone whose parents came here as legal immigrants, built great careers, and gave their son a solid education. It is hard to think of the Mamdani family as “merely visiting.”In a clear example of the left’s alternative reality, consider that Mr. Mamdani charged that “ICE invades our neighborhoods.” At another point he asserted “we see masked agents terrorizing our streets.” Since ICE is a law enforcement system set up by and financed by the Congress and directed by the president as chief executive, it clearly has authority to operate within American cities. On the left, the law enforcers are bad, and the lawbreakers are people who deserve our sympathy and support. Then we are asked to ignore the number of people shot or stabbed at Chicago last weekend (five killed and more than 20 injured) as though it is something over which we have no control.Mr. Mamdani charged that in America it is “oligarchs who buy elections.” Even though his challenging candidates just won three races against his idea of oligarchs. Indeed, in his own race for mayor, the supposed oligarchs opposed him and favored the losing candidate. It’s just one more example of left-wing myths defying fact-based reality.As further evidence of the left’s fantasy world, consider this quote from Mr. Mamdani’s speech: “We see America when we spend our tax dollars on bombs and bailouts.”Remember, though, that as mayor, Mr. Mamdani has a budget of $125.8 billion — $38 billion for education alone. In fact, the completely bombless New York City budget is larger than every state budget except the four biggest — California, Texas, Florida, and New York. So, with more money than 46 other governors, Mr. Mamdani has the nerve to suggest that we only spend money on bombs and bailouts. This gives you some sense of how out of touch with reality the left is.
