Melania Trump To Host Russian, Ukrainian Officials Together at White House

The White House says first lady Melania Trump will host representatives of Russia and Ukraine together Thursday at the White House after securing a temporary ceasefire at the city of Oleshky.Ms. Trump is also scheduled to deliver public remarks on the ceasefire. “This event represents an extraordinary moment in American history,” Mrs. Trump’s office on Tuesday said in a statement. The announcement did not indicate who will attend the meeting or what would be discussed. The Kyiv Independent reported that Russia’s human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and Ukraine’s ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets were expected to attend the event. Ms. Lantratova faces sanctions in America and would need a special State Department waiver to enter the country.Mrs. Trump says she independently initiated engagement between Russia and Ukraine and successfully secured the ceasefire in Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region. The six-day ceasefire ended on November 1. “The mission was a success,” Mrs. Trump said in an X post announcing the expiration of the pause in fighting. The city, located just across the Dnipro River from Kherson, had been effectively blockaded by Russian troops since the early days of the invasion. Oleshky’s residents have faced severe shortages of food, water, and electricity. Additionally, approximately 90 percent of the city’s territory was flooded when the Kakkovka Dam was destroyed.Mrs. Trump said nearly 800 people were evacuated and critical aid was delivered to the people who chose to remain.Moscow, on Monday, said it had no plans to allow similar humanitarian operations. It has continued deadly attacks on other parts of Ukraine.Special Envoy Steve Witkoff says America will mediate working-level negotiations between Ukraine and Russia on November 10 and 11 at the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi.Mr. Witkoff says the purpose of the negotiations will be to advance President Trump’s goal to end the war. “Discussions will focus on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and next steps toward peace,” Mr. Witkoff said in an X post. He added that American negotiators will meet this week in Brussels with representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and NATO to discuss security guarantees and post-war reconstruction for Ukraine.Ukraine’s president, Vladimir Zelensky was at Berlin Tuesday to meet with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “I briefed the Chancellor on the situation in Ukraine and on the front. Every day, the Russians carry out strikes on our energy infrastructure, our cities, and our villages,” Mr. Zelensky said in an X post. “It is important that Germany stands with us at this time and is ready to continue its support. Friedrich and I discussed the support packages and decisions that are needed.”
