MS NOW Star Stephanie Ruhle Is Moved to a Lower-Profile Daytime Slot, and Ana Cabrera Is Out in Major Shake-Up

Executives at MS NOW, formerly MSNBC, are making dramatic changes to the left-wing network’s lineup, shifting their bombastic late-night star, Stephanie Ruhle, from her coveted 11 p.m. ET slot to a far less prestigious daytime slot. In another change, MS NOW star Ana Cabrera is leaving the network after coming under intense criticism for repeatedly and falsely stating or suggesting late last year that President Trump was seen in photos with female, potentially underage victims of Jeffrey Epstein. Ms. Cabrera, who joined MSNBC from CNN less than three years ago, says she is leaving of her own volition.In February, MS NOW saw its highest ratings since the 2024 presidential election, assisted by high-profile events such as President Trump’s State of the Union address, the suspected kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC News star Savannah Guthrie, and the first day of “Operation Epic Fury” and the strikes against Iran. But this week, the president of MS NOW, Rebecca Kutler, announced a major shake-up of the network’s lineup. In a memo to staff, Ms. Kutler said she is “confident that these changes will make what is already a successful lineup even stronger in the future.”Last year, Ms. Kutler directed several changes at then-MSNBC, such as firing a far-left personality, Joy Reid, and replacing her 7 p.m. show with a panel show, “The Weeknight,” which floundered for much of the year. As part of the latest shake-up, MS NOW is returning “Morning Joe” to a three-hour show, down from four. Co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski have been lobbying for a shorter show. To fill the space left open by the loss of the hour of “Morning Joe,” MS NOW is moving Ms. Ruhle from her 11 p.m. time slot to a two-hour daytime show from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., which is typically considered the doldrums for TV ratings.And to fill the 11 p.m. timeslot, MS NOW is turning to a weekend host, Ali Velshi, who has been emerging as a star for his passionate denunciations of Mr. Trump. Ms. Ruhle sought to put a positive spin on her departure from the more prestigious time slot, telling Mediaite’s Colby Hall that she loves the “nimbleness” of the network.“I love our studios, I love working together, I love being with the team. And kind of the beauty is, it’s a 25-year-old company, MS, right? We have the legacy, we have the brand of all that we’ve built, and now we have the nimbleness of not necessarily having to ask NBC’s permission,” she said. Mr. Trump has harshly criticized Ms. Ruhle for her commentary, calling her “highly neurotic” and accusing her of “spew[ing] lies” about his policies. Ms. Cabrera also put a brave face on the changes.In a video posted on X, she said, “I’ve decided to make a change, and I am leaving MS NOW.”“I am truly grateful for my time at MS NOW, for my wonderful colleagues, my amazing team that works so hard every day, and for you, the viewers who’ve put your trust in me to serve you through this most meaningful work,” she added. “I’m not leaving immediately, I’ll still be helming the anchor desk for a few more months, but I wanted to give you a heads up, and I look forward to sharing more about what’s next for me soon.”Ms. Cabrera’s departure comes as she has aggressively covered developments related to the release of the Epstein documents, including giving air to discredited reports that Mr. Trump appears in photos with potentially underage Epstein victims. In December, an MS NOW legal correspondent, Lisa Rubin, appeared on Ms. Cabrera’s show and claimed that an image released by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, which showed Mr. Trump posing with women whose faces were redacted, “suggests” that they were “minors and/or survivors.”However, the New York Post reported that the women in the picture were “adult women models” who represented a suntanning lotion company.After that segment, a conservative commentator, Terrence Williams, asked if Ms. Cabrera would be fired for airing the false claim. Last month, Ms. Cabrera interviewed a member of the House Oversight Committee, Yassamin Ansari, who called for Mr. Trump to be deposed in the Epstein case.
